What was "THE HIT" when you were in high school....

Senior year of high school there was one song that was indisputably on top. It was on the radio, it was on everyone's CD player, it was everywhere.

The song? Closer by Nine Inch Nails "My whole existence is flawed/you get me close to God" are lines seared in my brain. Of course, it was the line that followed these that made the song popular (and why it was largely misunderstood IMO): "I want to f*** you like an animal" I always interpreted the song as a type of confession: he was saying that he was using another person for sex to make up for all of his inadequacies. On another level, as a music geek, I considered the song to be a passacaglia. I can't remember now, but I think it was every 8 measures a new theme was introduced in the song. It built, and built, and built until it was almost just noise because so much was going on...and then the tension breaks: finally release. What was "THE HIT" your senior year of high school?

I don't know if it was the hit everyone else was listening too, I didn't pay attention to them, but it was the song I listened to.

Heard that every morning while the flag and song girls practiced their routines. Of course, being a yell leader, it simply couldn’t be avoided. My stoner buddies and I preferred the Ramones, Sex Pistols, and the Clash. Still have every Joe Strummer recording acquired in our music library. |
