Airbourne Perspective......
British carrier BMI Midlands today discovered that two of it's airliners ( that serve the UK-TelAviv route) had the state of Isreal removed from it's inflight display systems, in fact, neither TelAviv or Jerusalem showed on the maps or the city displays. The northern Jewish city of Haifa was shown, but was spelled as 'Khefa', the way it was spelled by the British Mandate just prior to Isreali independance in 1948.
The maps inflight also showed the constantly updated relative direction of Mecca. The torrents of complaints were finally discovered to be caused by the fact that these two airliners had been recently added to the BMI fleet from a defunct Arab charter airline that had the inflight maps 'tailored' to it's clientel. And as only Murphy could arrange, these two planes were put on the TelAviv run....... Last edited by fingpilot; 05-01-2009 at 09:38 AM.. |

Wow, that is Murphy at work at his finest.
So the Arabs don't recognize Israel? I know they aren't friendly with each other (used to work with a Palestinian and got some education RE: their point of view). What do they show it as on their maps, or do they just pretend it's not there?

Lots of maps in Muslim countries have Israel either blackened out or called "Occupied Palestine". Been that way a long time. And that's the least of their disparaging Israel in Muslim schools.

I was wondering about the Occupied Palestine thing. It seems crazy, but I can sort of understand that. The "blacked out" part, is hard to believe. Kind of an ignorant mentality, "If I don't look at it or recognize it, then it's not actually there." I think the US has actually done that sort of thing in the past, back in the 40s, 50s and 60s.
