Garage ceiling color: Red or Black?

I am going to paint my garage red. It is currently [dirty] white, and I don't think it has been painted since the 1980's.

Though that was a good decade...paint applied then has pretty much expired. This website called Completegarage.com has a picture of a garage with the walls red, the ceiling white, and the floor epoxy gray. I want to do this in my garage, and I have painted all the cabinets in the garage Rustoleum gray, but I need to settle on a ceiling color. Completegarage has a garage done in red like I prefer with a 996 and a C GT next to each other [Leno.....], but my garage? I can't figure out the ceiling color. I want to paint it black, so that it doesn't show dirt or cobwebs. That will make the room small, and it means two gallons of paint of a different color. The alternative is painting it the same color red as the walls.

Thoughts?

N!

PS: I'd post a pic, but I don't have one tonight. As it is, my garage is un-remarkable.

I would go with white to help with lighting. Black or red will make it cave like and I prefer my work space to be well lit

White, unless you don't wrench. Under no circumstances black or red. A light yellow maybe.

Again white. I bounces light around well - helps you see what your doing when wrenching.

X3 for white. You can never have too much light in a garage.

Red's fine. It'll go with the stripper pole, Normy.

White unless you have 10 feet height plus and a bunch of lights.

+1 if you ever want to see anything, white.

Think about trying to find an oily, 6mm wave washer on the floor of a strip club.

I guess the question is, where exactly did the oily 6mm washer come from

BTW, been jamming BHT inthe truck lately. My 6 year old daughter wants me to play the 'circle' song

Light fixtures with reflectors will produce as many lumens at work height and floor level regardless of ceiling color. Lighting should be hung as low as practical. However, if you have any natural light, it will be diminished.

Given the color of Normy's car, I think it will be dramatic in a setting such as he plans. I'd actually have 2 separate lighting systems. Task lighting and ambient. Probably mini halogens for the ambient.

True, but diffuse, reflected light from a white ceiling certainly helps those lumens out.

You know, like those 'torchiere' lamps that shoot at the ceiling and light up the whole room, IF the ceiling is white.

Somehow I think that a good amount of light sources and a white ceiling would still be more aesthetically pleasing than a black or red ceiling and twice as many light fixtures. Also, Normy, if you have ceiling fixtures, especially long fluorescent tubes or something, the housings of those are almost always white, so a different color ceiling might look funny with white fixtures breaking it up everywhere.

All the same color is easier fwiw. no cutting in the ceiling line.

I did my living room/ dining room all red with 2 black feature walls in the DR.
I did my office mustard walls with black ceiling and 1 black wall.
"CAVE" like describes it well........

Normy,

If you are going to work on the cars in the garage then white or a pale grey is the way forward...

If however you don't intend to then a dark grey or black ceiling with 'feature' lighting will look dramatic with the red walls and the whole space will be very dramatic...
