The original was an awesome car. To build a replica with a V8 strikes me as a bit of a heresy. I'd rather it have a hotted-up straight-6 from one of Mercedes more recent machines. Anyhow, long ago James from Top-Gear did a good piece on the car.
Here's a curious factoid: The street version of the 300SL actually had a hotter engine and wilder cam then the original race version did. That's progress!

I had (and blew) and opportunity to buy one of the four Proteus 300SLR replicas a few years ago when I purchased my C-type. The seller and I were going back and forth on the price and in the meantime someone swooped in from Europe and bought it. These cars are absolutely beautiful, with a hand made alloy body. The same car has recently reappeared for sale at a substantially higher price (250K Euro)

Nice replicar. However the real SLR had a desmodromic valve, in-line 8 engine, not the 6 in this one.

Afriend who shall remain nameless here has a red '56 Gullwing...still sporting factory paint. He uses it in order to keep the drool off the '58 Speedster.

Fair enough, but would be a shame to fault the rest of the car for lack of an unobtanium desmodromic straight eight.

I do question the judgment of whomever decided to add the Corvette (?) mirrors at some point in its life, though...
