'New' 300SL Gullwing....

Sex. Pure sex. I want it.

pasted from autoblog.com:

Gullwing GmbH is the company responsible for this heritage ride. They're also the company building the latest AC Cobra, complete with gullwing doors of course, and providing the underpinnings for Arturo Alonso's aforementioned Panamerica concept.

The design, as you can plainly see, is faithful to the original, but Gullwing has made some updates to the circa-1952 engineering. The 3-liter, straight six, 215-horsepower beating heart of the original has been replaced with Benz's latest 405-hp 5.5-liter V8 with accompanying 7-speed automatic gearbox. Gullwing has also redesigned the chassis, suspension and brakes to deal with the extra power, and added a host of modern features from ABS to air-conditioning, capping off the authentic interior with the retro-style Becker Mexico radio/sat-nav unit.

So equipped, a "new" Gullwing will set you back €165k (about $220k), but you'll have to wait 10 to 18 months for delivery, put down €50k ($66k) in advance and hope they haven't received more than 30 orders this year, 'cause that's the most they'll make each year at their factory in Dresden, Germany. By then a stick-shift six-cylinder version should be ready, along with a roadster, to say nothing of the new SLS AMG. Maybe "Back to the Future wasn't so far off after all.

I saw a fiberglass 300 SL coupe on the docks getting ready to be shipped. At 20 feet it had me wondering. I have no idea what was under the plastic.

Even at that price, it's WAY cheaper than a real 300SL.

If I could have only one, post pontoon fender era car, the 300 SL gull wing would be that car. The ultimate would be a street legal 300 SLR Uhlenhaut coupe. In either case, I'd drive it every day - garage queens do not belong in my posession.

Stirling Moss, with co-pilot Dennis Jenkinson, won the 1955 Mille Miglia in this 300 SLR roadster:

I wonder how the heritage car's weight compares to the original. Below is the Uhlenhaut coupe:

The first post in this thread mentions the "aformentioned Panamerica concept" which I believe this is. Same company then.

From the CG artist? Has this concept gone beyond that stage?

Pretty cool except for the wheels and superfluous red spears off the headlights, IMO.

Oops - previous post answers my question.

I agree 100%. But I think it's pretty cool as far as hideous piss poor rip-offs go.

I must be an old soul because if I had some serious play money I'd opt for this in a heartbeat rather than any contemporary exotic like most 33 year olds would.

Love the 'modern' Becker:

Not a 300 but all original and most importantly, mine.

so they make a replica for 200 + grand?

If i ever see one of those... i'll be :

Wow, a 300 SL?
Can i see the engine?
eeh... that's not right?! it's a replica?!?!?!?
dude. you're wasting my time with a knock off...

seriously, i hate aftermarket replicrap
If it didn't leave the same factory, the same base model
then it's replicrap

911's have a lot of room to wiggle, because in fact they are all the same base model... aircooled , 911

I recall looking at gullwing prices in a copy of Hemmings Motor News a while back, and there were maybe 1 or 2 genuine gullwings listed and maybe 6-7 replicas. The replicas had asking prices which were (if memory serves) only about 20-30% lower than the real deal. It was definitely a head-scratcher... can you imagine if a Beck 550 Spyder cost 80% of the price of a real 550 Spyder?

I can't wait to get a look at that gullwing-doored AC Cobra.

Edit: I thought it may have just been bad sentence construction, but they're actually building 'em.

Wait a second... that's not a gullwing door. That's a gullwing roof section.
