HOUSE! i just dont get it.

my wife likes to watch house. that is one show i just dont get. they are all the same but with 2 different endings.
i was in the hospital a few yeas ago and heard the nurses talking about it. i wanted to ask how anyone with, especially medical intelligence, could watch that show. but i figured going under the knife in a few minutes, i better not upset them.

masraum 05-12-2009 05:26 AM

It's not the medical stuff, I don't think. I used to watch it regularly. I don't watch it as much any more, but it's still good. I did notice that it seemed like the writers had a limited set of ailments for the little doctors to throw at house. I noticed that I'd hear the same diseases/ailments almost every show.

It's about House and his interaction with other folks. It's more about the psychological stuff than the medical stuff. Not to mention, he says the stuff I wish I could. When I think someone is being a dumbass, I'd like to tell them. He does.

Some of the luster has worn off for me, but the NCIS series and House seem to have sparked a whole bunch of new shows. Seems these shows are now showcasing intelligence which I think is actually a good thing. Better than the usual idiot crap on TV. I also like "Bones", "Lie to Me" (but I think it might get repetitive like House) and "The Mentalist".

Law and Order is on its last legs and it seems SVU as well. But the same think stuff.

I like the Mentalist for free TV very entertaining.

I still like House. It is one of only four shows I watch every week (House, Deadliest Catch, Lost and Top Gear - boy a psychologist would probably have a field day with that list). House has gotten a little weird, but it's sort of like a car wreck - I have to look.

VINMAN 05-12-2009 05:59 AM

House is one of the better shows on tv. I guess I like it because he has the same sarcastic attitude I'd have if I was an MD.:D

The only network shows I watch are, House, Without a Trace and Two and a half Men. The rest of it is crap.

t951 05-12-2009 06:10 AM

My wife and I love watching house. We always guess sarcoidosis and lupus, but alas, it never is.......

I love the women on that show! 13 is a perfect 10. It's a mathematical quandry 13=10.

After we watch it we wait until the Dr on PoliteDissent reviews it medically and see how far off it was.

Sadly, I think they could easily add more medical mystery to it by simply asking doctors for tough cases they have had to solve and work that in.

Recently though, it has been getting too much drama-ee and not enough medicine. I loved trying to diagnose it with the facts presented.

Oh, and most doctors will laugh at the way he orders any test he wants with no concern to cost.

House has the same plot in every episode.

1. Person collapses
2. G. House listens to music/plays piano
3. His crack-team gets chastised while House stays busy with other activities.
4. Patient is mis-diagnosed...starts to shake/convulse violently.
5. House looks at a basketball/rat/sidewalk (or other random object) and magically knows
what's really wrong with patient.
6. Patient loves House.

Schumi 05-12-2009 06:25 AM

I've seen it a few times and liked it when I saw it, but even in those short few times I noticed how it could get repetitive.

My interest was peaked when I saw that the guy rides a Repsol Honda replica on the show...
and in real life I guess too-

Psychologist you say??? What about the folks at PARF?

HardDrive 05-12-2009 06:49 AM

Wife is a doc and she loves the show. I think she likes it because she and he collegues are just about as snarky as the characters on the show. The conversation the staff can had out of earshot of patients can be.....colorful.

That about sizes it up. I watched a few episodes until that became apparent to me.

There was one episode where the cute blond doc tells the boys that a woman can orgasm continuously for an hour. I was waiting for a better explanation that never "came."

Nathans_Dad 05-12-2009 07:21 AM

I have never seen the show but I had a real life "House" moment yesterday.

Family brings in this guy who lives in Arkansas. He has been losing weight and is becoming progressively weaker. Docs in Arkansas have run tests but can't figure it out. So, family brings him in to the DFW area (where they live) and bring him to our ER where he gets admitted to me.

I come in and start to see the guy, he has neck muscle weakness, jaw muscle weakness, his eyelids are drooping to the point of almost being closed and he says that after he swallows a few bites of a meal he can't seem to get the muscles to work anymore to get the rest of the food down.

Answer???

Myasthenia Gravis.

I asked the family about 5 minutes into the interview if anyone had worked him up for myasthenia gravis and they said no. It was an absolute textbook presentation. I called in the neurologist and he agreed with the diagnosis, we sent off the labs to confirm but that will take 4-5 days. Meanwhile we are treating him for myasthenia.

It feels good to make a diagnosis based solely on clinical presentation like that, it wasn't any great feat though, any 3rd year med student could have made that diagnosis it was so obvious. I was honestly shocked the docs in Arkansas didn't figure it out.

maybe i am on the short list here. it jsut seems like his show is very limited. i have never watched nip/tuck, but i would think how many shows could you do and keep it intersesting.

you forgot he also goes in and operates or almost operates when everyone tells him not to.

nice car hes got. i never disliked him, just the show. he was good in the dalmation movie.

i was a bit surprised at the medical people that watch, well just the few i heard taliking about him. any other medical personel out there that watch? nice to get your opinions.

ax men has been our must watch this year, along with 2 1/2 men and the show that comes on after men. after that, the rest of the week sucks for us. mostly reruns of men. we started watching george too, nothing else on, but he is getting old quick. kinda llike mash in that a lot of the comments are the same.
oh, we watch deadly catch when we catch it.
the time warp is pretty neat too and how it is made. reminds me of a book my mom bought me when i was a kid because i liked to take things apart, thats another story. if i cant fix it, iam sure to take it apart to see how it worked and why it broke.

Shows I will bother to watch:

The Office
Dollhouse
Top Gear
Venture Brothers
South Park

Roosterrusek 05-12-2009 08:10 AM

Don't care, I like Cuddy in the tight outfits, and in particular the schoolgirl outfit when doing a pole dance for House.

Pigtails, Catholic School miniskirt and haltertop oh my.

I'll be in my bunk.

madmmac 05-12-2009 08:16 AM

If they would hire me to be one of the crack-team players/actor I know I could up the audience viewing every week.

3a. madmmac punches House in the face after not taking his crap again
3b. madmmac kicks House in the nuts after not taking his crap again.

So Hugh Laurie drives an early car, complete with skinny fuchs...

this guy just got infinitely cooler.

gr8fl4porsche 05-12-2009 08:23 AM

So, to clarify last night's episode.

House never got off the Vic's and never slept with Cuddy?
He was hallucinating the whole time?
He walked into the nut house for being crazy or an addict?

Hugh R 05-12-2009 08:25 AM

Don't seem to watch a lot of TV, I don't even watch any of my shows. But I do like the MD character that Hugh Laurie plays. His name is Hugh, what's not to like?
