I tried to get some mobile welding and bodywork going, but no one has any money for large expenses. And if you're welding on your car, you have large expenses! Besides, the arthritis is getting to me.

[QUOTE=milt;4659289]I'm really bored and I have much higher expectations./QUOTE]

I seem to recall from some earlier posts that you've an artistic bent/interest that goes back to your earlier years. If so, my idea would be to develop colorful designs and applying them to the pots.

In the past this would mean low fire glazes, which require a kiln of course and a lot of hassle (well, everything's relative).

With todays tech., there are durable paints (epoxy, et al) that could be hand painted either freehand or using computer generated die-cut stencils (or maybe even die cut colored pattern appliques) or air-brush...the possibilities are endless.

A basic knowledge of a decent graphics program like Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Paint Shop Pro or others would reduce a lot of the labor intensivness, perhaps to the point where you could focus on the creative aspects of design and reach a point where semi-skilled workers, housewives, etc., could do the application. Those that you did personally, you could sign, provide a cert. of authenticity and sell as original works or a limited, numbered edition.

Marketing could be done numerous ways including the circuit of craft shows that exist all over the country, hiring someone to hawk them at swap meets if you don't want to sit around doing it yourself, design motifs relating to hotels or resorts where they'd be sold in their gift shops, yada, yada.

I think the possibilites are endless if you've got the interest and energy to pursue them. Good luck!

I didn't see that. Good "eye."

Personally, I think the bright Mexican colors are intense. But, the importers are native Mexicans and have that idea about culture. There are many muted earthy colors being done as well. One of the things I will be doing after I get a better feel for this is helping with the marketing. That's what I do better when I'm able to stick my hand in.

I'm taking a slow and cautious approach. If I make any money at all, that will be super. Otherwise it's a Sunday morning flea market business and nothing more.

I haven't sold my tools and welding equipment just yet.

Fountains are coming. The principal family member is in Mexico today setting up some additional production of concrete products including fountains.

I see the possibilities you do, but the terra cotta has to be made more water proof to hold water indefinitely. I'm trying to keep it simple and they are trying to make a much bigger offering in terms of product.

Planting of the pots services are possible as well, but I would think the better thing to do is buy a 5 to 15 gallon plant at the nursery and drop it in the pot. They are designed to hold the common sizes of commercially grown plants.

It seems odd, but the product is moving quickly in spite of the economy. That might be because more people are less inclined to pay retail nursery prices for the pots. I can see by my surveys that the mark up at a high end nursery is like 150 to 200%. It's closer to 100% at discount nurseries including the Home Depot.

However, the designs aren't there. Here's one more page and I'll quit using up Wayne's bandwidth.

They have nickles these days? I thought the wacky weed was big time expensive. More than these "pots." In fact, pick 2 mediums and a fifty might cover the bill.

I shoulda mentioned prices. The "medium" 17" round by 15" high at to upper left in the 1st pic is $32. I think that's a lot of "pot" for 30 bucks.

I was gonna ask if there were any gardeners here that can comment on pricing. Some of the tall urns can be rather pricey for my budget, but I will focus on stuff that sells in the 20 to 50 range with good discounts for 3 or more.

How's that sound?

I'm not a gardener, but those prices sound cheap to me.
The local nursery sells that size for about $50 to $75.
I've not stopped by the pot farm, but i may just to see the prices to compare
