What is this called? Furniture question..

I believe this piece to be one of those put your spare change, hats, umbrella's on thingamajigs.... What do you call these? This thing is solid wood.... Any idea what the age is? Country of Mfg?... I am clueless when it comes to antiques... My wife wanted it and she got it for her birthday... I paid $250. Too Much?

If she wanted something like this and it puts a smile on her face for $250 I'd say you did good. You should stand it upright and I bet it would be more useful...

Have seen quite a few of these "repro" units from Asia marked anywhere from $100-$300. We have one as well for our foyer.

What's inside the doors, hooks? It could be a jewelry armoire.

Looks like umbrellas could be stored in the large railed parts, so a hall or entry piece is highly probable. Looks well made, likely worth more than you paid.

I really don't think this is a repro... In the pics it sort of looks like that cheesy furniture at the Chinese restaurants, but it isn't... This has no particle or compressed boards... all hard wood, with dove tails etc... even the drawer is properly made looks like oak sides & bottom... I am not saying that it is not a repro, but growing up a round cheap furniture my whole life, this does not appear to be the case with this piece....

Hall Tree is correct. You stole it; and it's beautiful. The hardware does not match the piece. The hardware is new(er). The piece, post Federalist. Small manufacturer, possibly English. Check inside a drawer, usually the left (were there more than one) for a brand. Like a cattle brand w/ a hot iron. Could be a simple name or a Trademark. Either way, if it's English walnut, you're golden; mahogany, not so much, still good for $250.

Then again, it could be crap, put-together furniture from Wal-Mart.
