A drugstore on two wheels...
The following are the chemicals one professional cyclist has taken to stay competitive.
1) CERA, 2) caffeine, 3) pseudo-ephedrine, 4) painkillers, 5) EPO, 6) human growth hormones, 7) insulin, http://www.velonews.com/article/93052/kohl-comes-clean How can I guy live through all that?

Thanks to medical supervision, that's how.
Those guys don't dope up without doctor's approval. On that level, the challenge is not to be the best athlete. The real challenge is to dope up as much as possible without getting caught. (my 2 cents...)

Isn't HGH considered a banned substance like steroids? I thought it was.

The subject of this story - Bernhard Kohl - who is one of my favorite riders, is going against the cycling cartel by naming names of riders, team managers and doctors who dope up their cyclists. It's a big no-no, but he doesn't care (himself being caught).
I think they should allow doping in all sports. Who cares? The chances that normal humans can compete against those who are born with greater strength, endurance and agility, renders normal humans inferior. These athletes are elite to begin with, and we can't approach them. Doping let's them become even a higher-level master race, if you will. So let them dope up. If athleticism dies out because cyclists, football and baseball players, track stars and now race car drivers decide they want to 'roid' go ahead. 'Roid on, dude.'

We used to take pseudo-ephedrine at rave parties.

I followed the velo news link and was saddened to see another story that Laurent Fignon is suffering from advanced intestinal cancer. I didn't like his dramatic antics when he was racing but it's sad news nonetheless...
Doping and cycling - it's been going on a long long time folks. It's a very physically demanding sport...more so that most/any others that I can think of. |

Arsenic was the big drug for cyclists back in the 30s and 40s.

They used to have that at the highest levels of powerlifting (powerlifting is a three lift event - bench press, squat, and snatch (not kratch...)). I'm not sure how it is anymore, but one of the pro organizations specifically prohibited testing. The other mandated it at every event. The differences soon became readily apparent.
In the untested organization, the bench record went up to somewhere around 730 pounds, the squat to somewhere around 1,100, and I believe the snatch bettered 800-900 pounds. Absolutely inhuman. I kind of quit paying attention to all of this years ago, but I often wonder how those boys are doing today.

I didn't realize the deadlift had topped 1,000 pounds - yikes. One of my favorite old weightlifting pictures was Franco Columbo dead lifting somewhere around 800 or more. The guy is so short, that by the time he got the bar to bend enough to start actually getting the plates off the floor, the plates only had to go up a few inches. I wonder what he is up to these days, what with his old buddy the Governator making it big and all.
