Doing a state inspection the local police officers personal vehicle

So, today I had to do a state inspection on a one of the local police officers personal trucks. Seemed like a pretty good guy, real muscular ,jar head hair cut , you guys know the type. He pulled me over about 2 years ago for speeding, and make a remark that he noticed that my rear tires were bald, and he was not going to write me a citation for it.( He still gave me the speeding ticket though). No hard feelings here, he was just doing his job, and he was pretty cordial about the whole thing.
So today ,I call him and tell him that he needs rear brake rotors (rust pitted to hell and back) and a couple of light bulbs.
He comes back and asks me if I can just sticker it, and he will do the brakes himself this weekend. Now, I have no doubt that he will, He said that he just did the fronts himself, and I could see the new parts and believed he would.
However , I told him lets keep it by the book, and you do the brakes this weekend , and come back and I will sticker it on monday.
As much as I wanted to be cool to him, I think that offering to break the law to a police officer would not be real smart. I have heard that the state police have been stinging local shops for this kind of stuff. I was just kind of surprised that he asked .
I think he was o.k with it ,and who knows, maybe he appreciated that I like to go by the book.
Now, I am sitting here wondering if I have just been stung , and passed the test, or is he ignorant of the law, or just seeing what he could get away with. Kind of makes you wonder

I think you did the right thing.

Sting or not, if it didn't pass inspection, it shouldn't get a sticker.

It doesn't really matter who the owner of the vehicle is or what they do for a living.

He's certainly not ignorant of the law, whether or not you were being set up for a sting. No harm in obeying the law in this case.

You did the right thing, the same thing you should have done to anyone else. Don't worry about it.

That's why it's good to have a son-in-law who's a state inspector!

You did the right thing. I wouldn't have, but then I'm not that smart

I used to work for a motorcycle shop and was a state inspector there. It sure made it nice when the motorcycle cops recognized me when pulled over. If they wrote me a ticket and came in to the shop at a later date, I always went the extra mile and gave them special discounts but I also let them know they had written me a ticket.

I got pulled over one day and I mentioned I'd seen him in the shop. He pulled out his wallet checking how much money he had and started rattling off the list of parts he needed. After a minute he asked what I was doing. I said I was trying to find my insurance card. He said, oh... you're not getting a ticket. He was in the shop a couple hours later

Agree and last thing you want is for it to come back and bite you on the rear end. Lean as far as possible to help him but follow the rules. Its your JOB and reputation thats at risk here.

You did the right thing, but now you must find something else to fail him when he brings it back.

Here in Va the police send in a very hot woman with a car that has a few issues, she will actually beg you for a good sticker, yanno kinda stroke your ego a bit. I rejected her and enjoyed those looooooooooooooooooooong legs, they looked good.
You did the right thing.
Isn't ia a PITA being a State inspector?

He sounds like a good, honest guy who wasn't out for any kind of "sting" or anything. I'm all for taking a guy at his word, and guys giving each other a break. Too bad we have had to become so paranoid about that.

A riding buddy and I were in the middle of B.F. nowhere in central Oregon last summer. Oregon law prohibits anyone pumping their own gas, but service station attendants typically allow motorcyclists to pump their own. Shouldn't be a big deal, right? So anyway, we pull in for gas, kind of hang out for a minute waiting for the attendant, see he is pretty busy with a couple of cars, so I put my card in and lift the handle. He wasted no time running over to us, hollaring at me to stop...

Turns out three guys had come through on bikes just recently. Per his usual practice, he was going to let them fill their own bikes. Turns out one was a gas pump enforcement agent, or whatever, and this jerk cited the station. Unbelievable.

There is a silver lining, however. The pin head started throwing his weight around before anyone had actually filled their tanks. Nearest gas was something like 70-80 miles in the direction they were headed, and at least that far back in the direction they had come. So the guy refused to fill them up. Shut the pumps off and everything. The three said "hey, no problem ass hole, we can make the next town". Little did they know, our intrepid gas station owner knew the owner of the only station in the next town.. heh heh heh... and the next town past that was another 50-60 miles or so, at least.

The owner/attendant was still wondering where those guys spent the night...
