Americans spill 17 million gallons of gasoline per year

Americans spill 17 million gallons of gasoline per year while filling their lawn mowers.

I heard that on the radio yesterday. Where do these statistics come from? Invergrove heights, MN is doing a program now where you get 50 bucks for your old lawn mower if you switch to a "more efficient" electric mower. When I had a yard I never found filling my mower to be problematic.

But recharging in the middle of doing the lawn is a major PITA.

Right now I'm doing two lawns, and I don't think an electric would last.

Still probably spills a lot of gas, but I don't think the impact is the same.

Have you ever met the "general public"? Do you consider yourself average? THat doesn't even take into account that most of the spills probably come from the below average.

Someone made that number up in an attempt to influence the weak minded. probably a guy who owns an electric lawn mower company. Or his senator wife.

I never spilled any gasoline until they came up with the new style spouts on gas cans which are impossible to use.

Some guy that had a bad case of the caffeine shakes filled his mower and that is the baseline.

Hey, I lived in Inver Grove Heights for 3 years, cool.

I have nothing else worthwhile to add to this thread.

When there are millions of people all doing the same thing: spilling gas, leaking motor oil, tossing a cigarette butt on the ground or just wearing out there tires going down the road...It all adds up in the storm drain.

just 4 oz of fuel x 10 million mower fill-ups is 312,500 gallons...

4 oz is 1/2 cup. Go pour 4 oz of water on the driveway. That will make a big wet spot!
