snail problems in the flower garden

we have snails like crazy, here. they are eating the hostas like you wouldn't believe.

does anyone have a good solution for reducing the snail damage to the flower garden?

varmint 06-23-2009 07:23 PM

spray can full of beer. hit the underside of the leaves too.

Not positive about the snails but recently cured a broccoli caterpillar prob with '7'.

nynor 06-23-2009 07:51 PM

i put some tupperware lids out, with beer in them. i am waiting to see what happens.

er.... '7'?

I got either this, or something like this at Home Depot. Worked like a charm. They had 2 or 3 different kinds. 1 of them was safe for pets and stuff, that's the one that I used.

Give your kids squirt bottles full of ammonia, and send them hunting. Snails and slugs dissolve in a bubbly mass of goo when you hit them with ammonia. Kids LOVE to find and spray them, and watch them dissolve. And ammonia is good for plants since it's pretty much a little squirt of nitrogen fertilizer.

NH4 is nitrogen fertilizer :).

sluggo makes them extinct your yards. that stuff works. one year snails decimated my basil crop. i sprinkled some out, and i have never seen a snail again. one application.

Sluggo is expensive at the home centers. I get mine in 80 pound sacks at the ag supply. In my new "little" house my neighbors and I split the cost. It is easily half the cost of the home center.

Sluggo is Ferric-Phosphate. It disrupts the snails digestive system, the little pricks starve to death. The neat thing is sluggo breaks down into fertillizer in the garden.

Snails are attracted to the crap and it will kill them in droves.

80lbs? How big is your yard? That's A LOT of snails and slugs.

I bet that if you bought it by the ton you could get an even bigger discount. ;)

:D

Get a duck.

GH85Carrera 06-24-2009 07:40 AM

Or invite some French friends over for dinner!

LOL, your right, but the driveway can't hold it with the cars I have.

I used to have a huge yard and needed the stuff, but I usually go in with the neighbors on it and we split the cost. Needless to say I haven't purchased a load in about three years and have another year to go.

I have some friends up in los osos and they have a duck or two that do a heck of a job on the snails. They loan the web footed crew out to their neighbors.

Fun for adults too:D

Salt works too

Ducks get them cleaned up.

I had lots of trouble with snails and slugs eating my small tree leaves.

I wound copper wire round the bottom of the trees (just 2 or 3 coils) and have had no problem since.

Seems they dont like crossing copper.

I've done the beer thing before. Surprising it works. Just get some plastic container tops and pour some beer in there (like the lids to Countrcrock Butter). For some reason the slugs are addicted to it and swarm to it. Kills them.
