Latest Garage Toy - Micro Lathe

Latest buy from Harbor Fight:

• Well balanced motor for smooth operation
• 0-3800 RPM variable speed
• Hardened bedways for rigidity
• Includes 3 jaw self centering chuck and splash guard
• Capacity: 7/16''
• Cross slide travel: 2-1/8''
• Bed dimensions: 14”L x 3-5/16”W x 5” H
• 6” L x 18 gauge 3-prong power cord
• Indicator lights

I paid $99 for it, reg $299. I have no real projects for it yet.
Not even sure why I bought it other than I always wanted a micro-lathe for some unknown reason. Perhaps Ju Ju is directing to make these sporatic purchases from time to time in order to someday build something that will change the course of technology and maybe even the world!

Capacity: 7/16"

What does that measure? The largest diameter round stock that can fit in the 3 jaw? It looks bigger than that. Can't do much in 7/16ths of an inch..

If I owned one it would have to be big enough to churn out some delrin suspension and sway bar bushings.

That is probably the hole through the headstock.

Micro?? That ain't micro, that's just mini.

Micro would be the lathe that they use to make sewing needles and stuff

Actually, I have found that larger (9-10") lathes are typically better for making small stuff. More mass, stiffer, more precise.

Yup. I was responding to Pazuzu....

Small lathe for economy, not necessarily small work or precision.

I sold a SB, too worn. Have both a 7x12 and a 9x?? Grizzly.

I use the 9x grizzly, and bought the smaller one to demonstrate for HS students.

To answer Schumi, 7x12 would probably be marginal for suspension bushings, would need to measure from the top of the cross-slide to the center of chuck.

To All considering a Milling Machine or Lathe, the tooling will add up to alot of $$. Great used deals are when the seller throws in the tooling.

I was kinda joking. We all know they don't use a lathe to make needles.

They forge them.

. . . and then they drill through them to make hypodermic needles.

With the right stock and a grinder I think I may try to make a few tools.

A buddy gave me a very nice homemade pen he made from Teak. He used a much larger lathe and wished what he had was smaller.

I guess I could make some cool homemade drumsticks too!
