They sound great even without a tube amp. I've considered buying some Klipschs for myself, but I've never had enough space for them.
I agree that the laminate is unfortunate, but it should be easy to remove and refinish.

Between the paper (or foil) speaker cone and the frame of the speaker there is a strip connecting the two. This strip usually degrades over time. It does a BIG job considering the flexing it must do.
