Mobil 1 15/50 - is it still available?

The 15/50 sythetic, I've been using it for years, had no trouble finding it a year ago, but now none of the stores seem to have it anymore. A bunch of other weights like 5/30, but no 15/50. Seems they don't stock it anymore.

I looked on Mobil's website, and it seems like it should be still available.

I buy it every day from the local advance auto parts store. Also, if there a cosco near you , they usually have it at a better price.

I buy it all the time. The catch is whether you can find the stuff with the older API rating. I think it used to be the red cap stuff, they then switched to "Extended Performance" with the yellow cap, but made the old SL-rated stuff with a silver cap on it. Very confusing stuff and a ton written about how it affects air-cooled engines and cats.

Yep, it's still available. Royal Purple 15-50 is still around too.

Mobil has not upgraded their formula to the latest API specs - they are roughly 8 years behind. Look at the API seal on the back. The key is to look for CJ-4 - even though the C designation was originally intended for commercial engines like diesels and the S designation was for passenger, the two have been virtually identical over the past 15 years or so - the add packs that chemical companies sell to blenders is a combined S/C formula. This way the blender doesn't have to make two different oils but they can market and label differently.

The key is to look for a CJ-4 designation on the API seal. This will provide the latest greatest formula.

From API:

Quote:
The latest service category rating for gasoline engines is "SM", introduced in November 2004 for 2005 and newer engines. SM-rated oils along with the previous "SL" (2001) and "SJ" (1997) ratings, are backwards compatible and can be safely used in older engines with exceptions (see update below). But the opposite is not true. Older obsolete service classifications (SH, SG, SF, etc.) may not meet OEM lubrication requirements for newer engines. Likewise, API SL oils should not be used in 2005 and later vehicles, and SJ oils should not be used in 2001 and newer vehicles.
As for the Mobil 15W50:

Specifications and Approvals

Mobil 1 15W-50 meets or exceeds the following industry specifications: API SM,SL,SJ,EC,CF

Typical Properties

Viscosity, ASTM D 445
cSt @ 40º C 131.2
cSt @ 100º C 18.1
Viscosity Index, ASTM D 2270 154
Sulfated Ash, wt%, ASTM D 874 1.21
HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ºC ASTM D 4683 4.50
Pour Point, ºC, ASTM D 97 -39
Flash Point, ºC, ASTM D 92 235
Density @15º C kg/l, ASTM D 4052 0.87

For an older car, you will be fine using this oil but for newer cars - 2008 and newer, the ash is too high. Look for a CJ-4 designation.
