a factory out dated 2.1 wbx VW starts out with 90hp. They were outdated when they turned them into liquid cooled. They don't last.
a 95 2.2 Subaru starts out with 135 hp and 20 years newer technology.

Hmmm... I've got to disagree with your "they (VW 2.1) don't last" comment. My syncro creeping up to 200k. Also, I really dislike belt driven OHC's --but, to their credit the subies are not interference engines. ...or are they?

I forget the break on the year for interference, all the new ones, but the old ones don't. Put on a new belt and fughedaboutit.

Picking up 40 hp and about that much torque. Very nice "everyone has done it" swap. All the bugs are ironed out, all the diagrams are on line. Go for it!

I think it's a great idea. If you don't mind saying, what's the price tag on this?

It's just different. The subies run higher compression IIRC and can give better mileage as well as power. OTOH, one has to deal with the non-standard configuration, and custom parts --which is fine if you know & work on your own rig. But then the little things like the oil filler, and dip-stick are no longer easily accessed (fold-down license plate.) Some conversion put a bump in the engine cover. Some conversions hang down low killing ground clearance. And then I know (for the syncros) the OE engine is water tight. --crossing a river (submerging the engine) isn't a problem. --don't know about the subies.

Point is, there are often little features/niceties lost with conversions. Not to say all conversions are uncool, just that I haven't seen any better than what I have in mine - -for how I use it.

I also like transplants. I have the 2.0 turbo to put in my 914, mine is an interference engine. Go for it and let us know the results.

I was going to ask how you were going to get it smogged and then realized your doesn't have to be.
But, you are going from air cooled to liquid, that's some work.

Dean, who is doing the conversion? Are they using a kit?

I constantly have my eyes open looking for a good deal on a Bus / Vanagon.

I like your conversion, my neighbor has a synchro westie with the audi 5 cylinder smog legal conversion. the original motors eat heads and are dog slow. After driving his I have been looking for one to convert, been looking for diesel westys to get around the smog. Whos doing your conversion?

I've read of a couple guys over in Tech who were thinking of putting a Subie engine in their 911s. Except for a Euro 3.2 or 3.6, the Subie Turbo flat four out powers all other Porsche flat sixes, is smaller and lighter.

I think it'd make a cool conversion for a 911 if you blew your stock flat-6 (and of course didn't have a Chevy V8 hanging around).

So you say a turbo'd 4 of today, can out power a non-turbo'd 6 of 30 years ago. Really?
