Alf why is that it looks like some of the swords on your site do not have handles?

Had the same question about the handles.
Also some of them appear to have rust on the blades. Wouldnt it be better to remove the rust or buff it out? Would think that leaving it would let it get worse.

He who turns his swords into plowshares usually ends up plowing for he who has the swords...

Only if you want to halve (or worse) the value of your investment. Nihonto collectors value authenticity and "original" condition over everything else. Every nick, dent, scratch, and rust spot could conceivably tell a story and/or be of historical significance.
If you absolutely HAVE to "restore" the blade, the only acceptable route is to have a togishi (properly trained and certified Japanese polisher) do the work. Prices start at over $100 per inch of blade and wait times are astronomical. There are perhaps 2 Americans who are qualified to do this sort of work and they, too, are in high demand. Any American who says "sure, I can polish your nihonto for you!" should be avoided like the guy who offers to install a Hyundai 4-cyl in your 911. Read this first: http://home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/nihonto.htm Nihonto collectors tend to make even the most anal concours weenies look like ham-fisted slobs in comparison.

MUST... NOT.... LOOK... AT... WEBSITE...
MUST BE STRONG... I looked at your site before, beautiful stuff... if I were a rich man I could fill a room with those swords... right next to the room full of guitars... with cases of old watches... and a garage full of cars... Sigh, "If I were a rich man"

look at the site folks, it is free to peek. If you want to buy, identify yourself as a Pelican for a discount.
I am back in the US for the Summer, heading back to Shanghai shortly for the day job. Some do not have handles because they have gone missing or have rotted away. I try not to restore too many swords, it keeps cost down and prices affordable so the buyer could restore to their own taste. $100 and inch to polish and making a handle and scabbard the right way another couple of grand. They cut great, but the user is more than half the equation.

Alf, where would a newbie get a new handle and how much trouble is it to fit and make look accurate for the sword?

To do it right the work will cost about $250 for the wood and ray skin foundation and $150 for the cord wrap. The metal fittings are extra, sky is the limit on fittings. A more economical way to go is to put it in shirasaya (all wood) mounts which will cost about $500 for scabbard and handle.
