Swearing can make you feel better, lessen pain
Mon Jul 13, 2009 11:31am EDT
Email | Print | Share| Reprints | Single Page[-] Text [+] LONDON (Reuters) - Cut your finger? Hurt your leg? Start swearing. It might lessen the pain.
Researchers from the school of psychology at Britain's Keele University have found swearing can make you feel better as it can have a "pain-lessening effect," according to a study published in the journal NeuroReport.

Colleagues Richard Stephens, John Atkins and Andrew Kingston, set out to establish if there was any link between swearing and physical pain.

"Swearing has been around for centuries and is an almost universal human linguistic phenomenon," says Stephens.

"It taps into emotional brain centers and appears to arise in the right brain, whereas most language production occurs in the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain. Our research shows one potential reason why swearing developed and why it persists."

Their study involved 64 volunteers who were each asked to put their hand in a tub of ice water for as long as possible while repeating a swear word of their choice.

They then repeated the experiment using a more commonplace word that they would use to describe a table.

The researchers found the volunteers were able to keep their hands in the ice water for a longer when swearing, establishing a link between swearing and an increase in pain tolerance.

Stephens said it was not clear how or why this link existed but it could be because swearing may increase aggression.

"What is clear is that swearing triggers not only an emotional response, but a physical one too, which may explain why the centuries-old practice of cursing developed and still persists today," he said.

Actually, this study touched on something else I can corraborate. They said the swearing is the only part of language that comes from the right side of the brain. My wife's grandfather had a stroke several years ago. He can no longer speak or write because of this. (He can hear fine and kick my butt in poker though.) He tries to talk but the words just come out a garbled mess. He can swear clear as a bell though.

when i broke my leg, i naturally got a cast on it. i had a mushy spot on my ankle that mashed in between the bumper and the car. it was VERY sensitive. remember that strange cast cutting saw? well, this fool started in on me. i knew from his trajectory that he was heading into my soft spot. i stopped him and warned him. he shrugged and kept on going, mumbling about how they are designed not to cut. well, he hit the mangled "ball" on the side of my ankle, and i unleashed like a sailor from hell. it wasnt so much that i directed it at him, it was really aimed to the world. he actually stopped and lectured me!more like preached scripture to me. he said the nurse was a lady, and she shouldnt have to hear this stuff. well, i sucked it up, and he took off my cast. the skin was really bad on that part, and he did cut me! i was bleeding. he felt bad, but didnt apologize. i reversed the holy lesson, back on him and his soapbox. he left and the nurse cleaned it up. she said sorry, and said she has heard worse. cussing made me feel better.

Actually any really loud straight from the gut scream has a similar effect for me. Mine usually sound like GAAAAHHHHH!!!!! at the top of my lungs.

It's also FABULOUS at reducing stress. Kinda weirds everyone else in the grocery store out, but it does a wonderful job of relieving my stress.
