I thought it looked like a Catera, but the badging seemed new, said ecotec or something on the rear left.

Could this be a propane or alternate fuel test mule?

It's an 'Omega 2.0' which is a 2.0L Ecotec 4 cylinder hence the 'Ecotec' badge.

Catera was low tide, even for GM.
Recent and current GM products aren't as bad as people's perceptions

Of course I've driven many, many of them. I consulted for GM at the time. I can't tell you how many were bought back under lemon law or 'good will'. It wasn't unusual to see two pages of warranty claims show up on the GM VIS.

It's not that Cateras weren't nice driving cars. They were just poorly executed and plagued with quality issues.

They have a few well known issues (heater step up motors, the oil-AF cooler, and an interference engine design), but nothing major. Certainly nothing like the known issues a typical Porsche has. For the record, I fix my own cars, and used to be an automotive tech.

The Catera's real problem was poorly marketing the car as something it wasn't....a Cadillac.

That antenna in the trunk looks like a mag base CB antenna (Lil Wil or maybe a K30).

Nope, this was low tide for GM, Cadillac in particular...

I drove one for a while. It was a pile of junk.

The Omega (or Vauxhall Carlton in the UK) also formed the basis for this monster car...

You're being too kind. That p.o.s. was more like dry lakebed.

very unremarkable
