Leaving California ??

My niece's husband (marine sniper) recently deployed to Afhganistan. She loves the CA weather but since she hasn't the proverbial snowballs chance of getting a job as a teacher in CA. (she has 10 years experience and a masters degree, so she is moving back to TX - has her pick of several positions here).

When pricing U-Hauls we found this of interest:
26' truck
Oceanside -> Dallas area $1900
Dallas -> Oceanside $700

17' truck
Oceanside -> Dallas $1200
Dallas -> Oceanside $600

Appears a lot more people are moving from California than to California..

I told her the same thing I told my daughter when she moved from Dana Point to Houston: just remember that you are moving from weather heaven to weather hell...

Maybe there are still too many people moving to California, hence the over-abundance of U-hauls here. It's cheaper to discount a rental than to pay to ship them back ......

Jack,

When my sister, also a teacher, returned to California she ran into the same problem. Has your sister tried a private school? That is where my sis got her restart, so to speak, and eventually she landed a job in the public schools? Just an idea, the private schools don't pay as much, but my sister liked the teaching environment. I can completely understand her wanting to leave California, it has changed and is not what it should be.

I grew up in California and and lived in Texas for 3 years, Phoenix for 3 years and Pittsburgh for 10 years. I was never so happy when I moved back.

Rent from ANYONE but U-Haul.

My trip from Conroe to Sacramento was a nightmare. Broke down literally a dozen times. The story is probably on here somewhere.

HUH???? It is $1900 to go to Dallas and discounted to 600 to drive it back to CA....So th epremium is on leaving CA and NOT coming to CA.

Geezus no wonder the Republicans lost the last election..Maybe all that sunshine has turned your mind to mush.

As I said they are going to build a fence to keep people from leaving CA...they need your bodies to keep paying and paying and paying some more.

Not a funding problem...a spending problem. California is as cracked as cheap Santa Monica stucco.

Most every year the stupid people in my lovely state vote for tens of billions of dollars in bond measures without ever thinking about where the money will come from to pay the money back. I've always thought that all the ballot measures should be required to be self funding (i.e. raised taxes to pay for the bonds). If they were NONE of them would pass, and we wouldn't be in this mess.

IIRC all but one of the ballot measures failed in the last election, putting Arnie on the defensive you now see him operating from.

The people here are sick and tired of our govt and its inadequacies, and are not willing to help it by voting in measures that will resolve nothing but continued mismanagement. It's plain and simple.

The citizens are getting wiser about the govt's ineptitude.

I thought it sounds a great place for someone who, well, who doesn't actually do anything.

Back on renting subject. It may be cheaper to rent the truck "local" for a week. Much driving to do that though.

Where would a marine sniper get a job in the private sector? Are there more opportunities in TX than CA?
