Do ya ever forget to smile
I don't mean at the pleasant person who just served you at dinner , I mean in general. Yanno like there are too many issues at home, so you become too focused on them and start to become emotionless. Thats okay though because there is always work, and that is a different part of your life where you can escape home, but then that too becomes troublesome and you find yourself taking no pleasure from your chosen profession. Then before you know it you have simply forgotten how to smile. Is it possible for a person to break their lives down to black and white and think in only ways that are mathematically correct, not allowing emotion of any kind to play into the decisions that need to be made? Is this called living or is this just simple existance with the hope that all will return to what could be and then the smile from inside can return?
No I haven't started drinking again.............................maybe I should.

I just went through an extended sales deal on my house in CT and during that period I became much more cynical and don't think I smiled much. I was basically pissed all the time. Nothing in the deal seemed to go right, right up into the closing. Just a freaking nightmare. Now it's over. It's taken me the better part of the last two days to get into a more relaxed mood.
Believe it or not, the buyers financed 96.5% of the sale price, got an FHA loan and the mortgage company wouldn't wire transfer the funds from California until Friday morning, or noon east coast time for a 2:30 closing. That meant that when I walked out of the closing I had my check but all the banks were closed. Now I have to sit on it until tomorrow. The deal is done, I have my money. What a screwed up system. |

Rick, you have taken the words right out of my mouth. I am so depraved lately, it seems I only smile out of irony and sarcasm. I am turning Schopenhauer in spades while waiting for a five year long middle age crisis to subside. Ridiculous and pathetic.
Meanwhile, I have a very dear friend who does not have a job, no money and live with his mother since many years but he is still the most optimistic, happy and easy going person I know. He sees life for what it is (what?) and take one day at a time, enjoying the moment. Why canīt I adopt that attitude. End whining (again..).

I have had a number of conversations regarding this same topic. My dad made an interesting observation in that he has noticed how glum folks seem. It bothers him, and he is not an easy one to throw a smile.
Funny thing is that one of the practices here in Moorpark is to wave at folks as you walk or drive in town. Its a Moorpark thing and was something I really liked about the town when I first moved here in 95. I have noticed that although folks don't seem to smile as much, the wave to your neighbor thing is still going strong. I like to contribute to it. Give it a try, it helps.

Marcus - How can you live in a country that produces Princess Madeleine, and not smile?
That's a little shallow but it's the best that I can do at the moment. Best, Tom

Rick/Livi,
I can't tell you how much that struck a chord with me. To a certain extent I see many of the people around the area being glum as well. For me, it seems to be mostly the economy, and (without getting into PARF territory) fear of where our government is going. Home situations only seem to add to the stress. You know..." If a man said something in a forest and ....." you know the rest. Drives me up a tree ![]()

Live to be older, suffer fools eternally, outwit the government at every turn to have a dollar to buy food and yes, there isn't much smiling anymore. I don't. Get off my lawn.

People who smile when they just sit there scare me.
I've gone beyond forgetting to smile. I was told I have the 1,000 yard stare. rjp

It's a sad, but true reality with me. What is there to really smile about? Stress, money, taxes, relationships, etc. etc. I ask the question hourly. rjp

I thought it was just me.
The last three months have been the worst of my life. A 12 year relationship went poof, my Father had a heart attack, we had a huge storm tear the hell out of my house, only to find out I was WAY underinsured, and then I get laid off. Yeah life sucked. But a smile from a special someone brought mine back. I came to realise the last relationship ending wasn't all my fault, My Father is alive and well, it's only a house, and eventually I'll find another job. I'm not an optimist by any means, but guys, I think we get caught up in all the bull****, and forget to look at the good side of things. It's out there, we just need to look for it, and remember it's out there. It can't rain all the time. I hope you guys can get past the funk, because the sunshine is GORGEOUS!! |

I forget to smile all the time. I've been that way my whole life. I usually try to explain it to the nosey people who want to know why I'm not smiling by saying, "I don't come from Smiling People!" Which is sort of true.
But I Never fail to smile when greeted at home by my Golden Retriever, or my girlfriend.... usually in that order! |

Problem is you need to get out of yourself and look around. I'm sure you have plenty to be grateful for and smile about. Oh and yes those boobies that were posted make me smile. Try an outing to your local strip club and get a grin.

I can look at the bright side, blah blah, and still not smile. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate something or am not thankful. I can smile inwards with my eyebrows.
