Happy Birthday Sid

Geronimo '74 04-21-2011 12:49 AM

Is it Sid's B-day??
Damn, I didn't know....

Happy birthday Sidney!!

Rick, We can be in Scottsville on Sept 20 in the evening, the entire day the 21st and leave for Richmond the 22nd in the morning. That's Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday...
How does that sound?

Rick V 04-21-2011 12:57 AM

I'll fire it by the boss, but it sounds good. Fall in Va is a beautiful time, you picked a good time of the year.

Geronimo '74 04-21-2011 01:08 AM

Good Morning guys.

Happy Birthday Sid. No longer a teenager!

This is a picture of Sid when he first wanted a Porsche just 18 years ago.

Morning Glen

GH85Carrera 04-21-2011 04:57 AM

Good morning G-man.

My 2nd computer has been churning non stop on that project with the monster files. We are stuck will following what the contract says we have to deliver. They will have a heck of a time using such monster files. Part of the contract is to make one mosaic of all the files into one file at full resolution. My computer ran for 26 hours to make the mosaic. It is a new record monster file. It is a crazy big file. It covers 200 sq miles and each pixel covers just 1/4 of a foot. It is a JPEG 2000 file format. The only program I have that will open it is the one that made the file.

I blanked out the customer name just to protect the innocent. :D

Geronimo '74 04-21-2011 05:04 AM

those are some huuuuuge files!. My laptop would start smoking in advance, I'm sure.
You do realize this is going to backfire, don't you?
They'll be knocking on your door before you are through making fun of them...:)
If you are the only one that can open the file, who do you think will have to solve their problem??
At least you can say you did it to their specs, and will need to charge extra if you're going to have to produce other formats...

Geronimo '74 04-21-2011 05:07 AM

Or maybe you have to give them the individual files too and they just will not use the large composed file.
So your effort was useless... (but at least paid for ;))

GH85Carrera 04-21-2011 05:27 AM

We are providing them with the individual files as well. My computer is churning away on that right now. It will be done sometime tomorrow morning.

We fully expect them to complain about the file size. We will point to the bid specs and say that is what was specified. Right now each image covers 6,000 x 6,000 feet, just over a square mile. At the mega resolution they wanted it becomes a 1.6 gig tif file. The only way to make the file smaller is to lower the resolution or cut them up into more pieces. The cool part of geo-coded images is that each image knows where it belongs. So all you have to do is open the file and it pops right into position. The problem is you are looking through a list of hundreds of files to find the next file you need.

In the end we make a really neat file that is a multi-resolution file. If you zoom out to see the entire thing it displays all the information you monitor can show. As you zoom in to an area it bring in more data. That will be a monster file as well. We will have to deliver the project on a 2TB hard drive.

It is cool to keep drilling down into the file and see the detail. You can tell the color of clothes a person is wearing. You can't see anything that would identify them, but you can usually tell if they are male or female.
