You have to remember not to go too stiff or the car will be undrivable on regular roads. For me, in Lanna I left the standard bars in it, replaced all my bushings with poly/graphite (a real headache from a noise standpoint) and installed Koni adjustable sport shocks. It is all the car wants on the street. Remember you can tune with sway bars, ect. If you make it too stiff and run some form of street tire you are going to develop under steer. Nothing like hitting a corner hot and plowing.

Stock tbar's.

slodave 07-21-2011 02:22 AM

You'd be surprised how stiff new HD's are.

Geronimo '74 07-21-2011 02:22 AM

Most of the threads I've read say it is best to change the tbars along with stiffer shocks.
I do need to keep it streetable though. So maybe 21/27 is better for my kidneys and fillings... :)

slodave 07-21-2011 02:22 AM

HD's are stock in most cases.

slodave 07-21-2011 02:24 AM

But... For AX, I need to upgrade. Next rear shocks will be sports. A recent vid shooting out the back window tells me this is really needed! I also plan to modify the sway bars. <-- Tbars are not needed for a while. ;)

Mine has Boge struts. Black plastic goo is still there, so I'm guessing they are the originals that came with the car 25 years and 119K miles ago.

Oh I also have a front strut brace. (and run RA1's)
As for Dave, you gotta remember he has a targa, they conform to the track. :)

slodave 07-21-2011 02:30 AM

Ya'll don't understand! It's about keeping all 4 wheels on the ground, all the time! They got it right with the Targa! :D

Front triangulated strut brace along with a triangulated harness bar. ;)

Geronimo '74 07-21-2011 02:40 AM

Damn, now I need a front strut brace too.... :D

Good Morning Guys.

G-Man when I did my suspension refresh I went back with the Elephant racing OEM style rubber bushings. Even new stabilizer bar bushings. Bilstein HD and 21/27 mm bars. I would have left in the stock bars but the fronts had rubbed because the old bushings had worn out. Since I HAD to buy new fronts I went up one since the stock size is almost impossible to find new. That meant I needed to go up one in the rear. I also rebuilt all my calipers "while I was in there". That was easy and not expensive.

I might have to double check the torsion bar size. I just remember that is is one mm bigger that OEM for my 1985 US spec car. While I was in there I also put on new ball joints and turbo tie rods, and rebuilt the steering rack. Basically the entire suspension and steering system of the car outside of the passenger compartment was replaced or refreshed. I relly like the improvement in the way it drives.

By the way this is my 10,000th post!

Geronimo '74 07-21-2011 04:40 AM

I'm leaving soon to get my shocks and to see for tbars too. (I most likely wil go for the 21/27 combo too)

Happy 10K, Glen :)

Geronimo '74 07-21-2011 08:32 AM

Ok, I have the front bilstein HD's, the rears weren't in yet. (next week)
Found some 964 cams, for cheap, and they look like new!
Torsion bars had to be ordered but I told him to hold on, so I can do some more research on which one to choose... decisions decisions....

Porsche-poor 07-21-2011 08:51 AM

So how far out till it runs?

Geronimo '74 07-21-2011 09:41 AM

Could be some more weeks.
I'm still cleaning parts like a motherfukher.... (man, how I love to clean parts....)
But there is light at the end of the tunnel....
