There goes the neighborhood.

Porsche-poor 11-16-2011 08:06 AM

nynor, how big was the elk? Bull or cow?

nynor 11-16-2011 08:09 AM

bull. medium size, is what i was told. about 650 lbs.

Porsche-poor 11-16-2011 08:12 AM

Points? I have not been elk hunting since probably 2002 and then all I saw was slow elk (moo cows).

The work just starts after you pull the trigger huh?

nynor 11-16-2011 08:15 AM

it was 6 x 6. yeah, a lot of work. luckily for me, i wasn't the one doing the shooting, so i didn't have to do much of the work. i was there for social purposes, believe it or not.

Porsche-poor 11-16-2011 08:18 AM

Wow a big one. The last year I went we had three down by 8:00am on the next to last day. Did not get out of the woods till after dark and no horse for packing.

They are the best tasting to eat. Ever had elk?

nynor 11-16-2011 08:32 AM

yes, i have. there is about 50 pounds of steak and hamburger in our freezer. i think the flavor is fine, but it is kinda tough. i've been slicing it real thin and marinading it like souvlaki. it is damn good. also, marinading in coca-cola overnight is good. the hamburger is really really nice. my wife is super picky about meat and she'll eat it. on the other hand, if it creeps, crawls, slithers, swims, flies, wriggles, or is otherwise made of meat, i'll eat it.

nynor 11-16-2011 08:33 AM

oh, and the elk was quartered on the spot and packed out by horse.

Well, the good news is I don't have strep, just a fcking sinus infection.... I see lots of sudafed in my future....

nynor 11-16-2011 09:00 AM

irrigate it regularly with normal saline solution. for the win.

Flieger 11-16-2011 09:01 AM

I like this one! :)

Noah930 11-16-2011 09:01 AM

Gotta go get my 911 smogged. Fortunately it's stock. Unfortunately, there's no rolling exemption in CA, and the restrictions get tighter with time. At some point, even a fresh-off-the-showroom 1987 911 (were there one) isn't going to pass modern day emissions.

How's your smog place, Dave?

edit: oh yeah, dig the redhead.

Hopefully you got some antibiotics for the sinus infection. Sudafed will not do jack for you until the infection is killed.

If you have yellow snot, your are infected, take the antibiotics. You will not "get over it" without them for a long long time. It is just a bad pookie infection just millimeters away from your brain.

So I logged in today and got to the tech forums pretty quickly and then clicked on my use cp button to see the subscribed threads. It was slow so I opened another tab then came back to it when it was finished. It brought up all the threads that had posts since last night but when I went to read the first new posts it showed that I had last logged in about a minute ago. Argh! I hate when it does that. Means I have to carefully look through all the threads for when the last post was, then go back through the threads to find the first unread.

Why does that happen? I know it will do that if I click too many times on the tech forum entry button but it was working fine all the way through the search for the threads with new posts. What gives?

Dave?

man, if i ever was on a reservation, i'de have been kicked by the time i was 14.
I never simply "left" anything in those days, i either escaped places that wanted to keep me there, or i got kicked out of places that no longer wanted me around.

Short day for me out of here in 45 min.

Elk is better for you than beef. Tuff means it was probably running when killed. The one I got was standing still and had not one clue what was about to happen. Really tender.

i don't know.... i've had tough beef before, and i doubt it was running when it was killed. i wasn't there when this elk was killed, but my hunt-guide friend was. the story he told is that the elk was shot in the neck from about 40 yards and dropped like a stone. the shooter was an aussie (true story) that had never fired a gun before, hence the nearly point blank shot.

this meat has zero fat in it. i mean none. i have to coat it with olive oil prior to cooking so that it doesn't dry out.

Porsche-poor 11-16-2011 09:27 AM

Zero fat is better for you in the long run. Yep cooking it is a challenge.

yeah, i am sure this meat is better for me than the fatty beef i've been buying. like i said, i like the flavor: stronger than beef, but not as strong as lamb (but i LOVE lamb!).

i am still working on it. i am thinking that braising the steaks and then putting them on the grill might give me better results. in fact, i going to try braising them in beer today.
