okay, let me preface this by saying i don't believe in fix-its in a bottle.
so, the subaru developed an coolant leak. for the life of me, i couldn't figure out where it was going. no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil. all the hoses look solid, including the new water pump i installed when i did the timing belts, 15,000 miles ago.... new gaskets and stuff is going to run $2k to have done (and, NO, i am not doing it myself, as i don't have the time to sort it and we need the car in days, not weeks). oh, did i just mention that i did the timing belts? i did, didn't i. which included putting new coolant in the system, etc. so, i get online and find out that subarus are notorious for leaking coolant at the cylinder heads. my particular year, a 2000, tends to lose coolant to the outside. THEN i find out that the 'fix', per a recall bulletin (!!!) is to use 'subaru coolant conditioner'. AND if you change the coolant, you have to put new 'conditioner' in with it. i didn't know this and didn't put any in. looking further, it seems that this is the same stuff as Holt's "radweld". radweld it costs $1/bottle on amazon. i ordered three bottles, because shipping is $5, regardless. it shows up in these cute little blue bottles. all three fit in a padded envelope (no kidding, that is how they shipped it). i figure, WTF, a $1 (plus shipping) fix, or $1900, and i doubt it can hurt. besides, i am SURE that subaru's engineers know a LOT more than me and this is their official fix. and i am not kidding, it really is. i put it in. i'll be damned if it doesn't seem to be working. i must say, i got really suspicious when i found black chunky stuff at the radiator cap area, prior to reading up subaru's 'fix'. now i know exactly what that stuff was. |
sounds like an engineers way of fixing an engineers problem. Aftermarket lol

Sounds like something I need to try in the Rover. it loses enough water that I need to put some in every 3 months. I can sometimes smell hot rad water with it is hot and the engine is hot, but can't find a leak anywhere. Had it pressure tested and no leaks found either.
I have to just keep telling myself, hey it's an $800 truck, so what's a little water now and then. |
My parents' neighbors have a Defender 90 parked outside at the curb. I've always loved the look of them. And they've held their value for the past 15+ years I've lusted for one. But you guys are easily convincing me to stay away from anything British. Well, maybe I could make an exception for a McLaren F1...

Honestly the only things I've done to mine is an alternator, battery, a ABS wheel sensor, and get the A/C charged. Well…besides put in a kick ass stereo system worth 3 times the value of the truck.
I bought it just to use as a bad weather beater, it has done that well. Been using it as a daily driver around town as a grocery getter and to doc appointments as I recovered with my foot and it always just goes. Had it checked out after I first bought it and the well recommended mechanic said the old Range Rover Classics, pre 1996, are mechanically bulletproof and I could drive it till it rusts out. Must be something to that statement. When laid up with my foot my brother drove it for two weeks with the low water and hot dummy lights on. No wonder he doesn't have a car that works. II didn't see the lights on until he took me to a doc appointment. Topped up the water and has been running fine since. The really sad part is, even though during that time I was not supposed to be vertical i.e. have my foot below my heart at the time, had to top the water up myself. Again, no wonder his car doesn't run and he somehow can't ever afford to fix it. |

D that Subie mechanic in a can stuff is just stop leak that has been refined into smaller chunks so it doesn't kill the heater core. We have that stuff laying all around the dealership as we refuse to use it. The guys at school E.G. instructors told us not to use it |
Not generally a good idea to use chemicals designed to stop things from flowing in a system that relies on things flowing. It's gotta settle and harden somewhere.
That's almost as bad as using that radiator flush stuff. It'll flush the freeze plugs right out of the block, especially if the coolant hasn't been changed in a long time, gone acidic and started eroding away at the seals. |
