Jeff.....

Outback Porsche 12-28-2013 03:49 PM

G'day Rick.

I'm enjoying a lay-in this morning, watching a bit of cricket before I get back at jackhammering tiles and cutting the old shower hob out.

nynor 12-28-2013 03:49 PM

hmm... perhaps it is time to sell the 951 and get a boxter. seriously.

Rick V 12-28-2013 03:53 PM

Not good in the snow D. Willie is sitting on 255's and that is way too much rubber for any amount of snow. Your 951 is much better. My 87S was fantastic in snow and tons of fun to boot in the slick stuff.

nynor 12-28-2013 03:59 PM

hah! what width rubber do you suppose the 951 is sitting on?

really, my '83 was tops with the snow.

i've had rear wheel drive cars since i was 18, in this state. the snow is inconvenient, but i can manage better than the texting/suv/f'wit.

Rick V 12-28-2013 04:04 PM

Okay you got me there. I find it is kind of hard to keep the Boxster from spinning the wheels because if comes into a "power band" at low 2k, combined with the rubber it just doesn't want to go well. Might help if I used the traction control but I detest it, so I don't

Rolled by the new spoon store today and the owner was a complete a55. He was trying to tell me that a 223 is a good round for a 1k meter shot, as I was looking at a 338LM. He got a little mad when I told him IF you could get a 223 to go that far and actually hit a target all you would do would be to piss it off.
Needless to say he won't be getting any of my money

sounds about right. not enough mass to get the job done. and what was he thinking, if you are looking at a 338LM?!

What are the things to look for in a Boxster? I've seen a number of 01-02 S's around here....

I'm sitting on my back porch, smoking a cigar, relaxing with the pup and looking at the fattest raccoon I've ever seen in my life........through the Eotech on top of my AR......If I didn't know for a fact that my yankee neighbors would flip out, I'd pull the trigger....this little bastard has been tearing crap up around the neighborhood

HHI944 12-28-2013 04:32 PM

The only way 5.56 is anywhere near effective at 1km is if you have full auto and can use it as suppressive fire.

Rick V 12-28-2013 04:36 PM

Joe just ignore the IMS issues if the car has over 60k on the clock, As a general rule if it hasn't blown up by then it isn't going to.
Sway bar endlinks suck and rattle, Covers for the top like to need adjustments and the window regulators get lazy. Beyond that just normal stuff.
D I doubt the owner realized when I said I was looking for something long range he didn't realize I was talking a mile+
I am actually considering a 338WinMag for several reasons, cost and selection plus availability of ammo being top of the list

HHI944 12-28-2013 04:58 PM

IMS was my real concern....There's one down Byron's way that has a Warranty replaced engine with only 38k on it.....and it's pretty reasonably priced...

338LM is a devastating round.....hell at 1km it still has about the same kinetic energy of a 5.56 at the muzzle...

Had an 01 S for 4 years. No rear main seal problems, but dealership replaced the MAF with the wrong one after I complained it took too long to crank after first year of ownership. With wrong MAF it kept backfiring on deceleration and blowing holes in the cats. The dealership blamed it on carbon deposits and did a valve cleaning with that pressurized solvent system and didn't change the oil after. 2 weeks later it spun a bearing. Porsche put a new motor in. Later a factory tech remembered there were two different MAFs for the 01 S and the put the correct one on and no more problems.

Also the clear coat started flaking off the red brake calipers, common on the 01 S. They tried to blame it on me autocrossing. I ask if it was from the calipers getting too hot from racing, wouldn't the fronts be the ones flaking. All four were and they replaced all four under warranty, $7000.

Had the top adjusted any time it hesitated or even sounded a little different going up or down and never had any issues. There is stuff called Plexus that does great at clearing the rear plastic window.

Really enjoyed driving my Boxster S. Kept the top down most all the time, and even kept an extra baseball cap behind the passenger seat for passengers that complained about the top being down.

The 338LM is also $6 pop and an entry level spoon is $1,200. add to that $2,500 for the scope it adds up fast.
Th biggest reason for my looking at the 338WM

HHI944 12-28-2013 05:04 PM

$6 a round?? Shoot, the only place around here that stocks it is $8 per and up!

You can't get around the big expense of the scope by going to a different cartridge....at least not if you still want that range...

HHI944 12-28-2013 05:05 PM

I'm ok with clear coat flaking off the calipers....There's an 01 S local that has a glass rear window and 80k miles....looks pretty clean. I might go look at it tomorrow.

Rick V 12-28-2013 05:07 PM

The WM doesn't have the range. The LM is 25k meters the WM is 15 at best so I can back off the monster Night Force and just go with a regular one. That and I don't have to factor rotation of the earth into my windage calculations.

HHI944 12-28-2013 05:09 PM

oooh, Mr. Coon is back....wonder what's quietest 9mm, 3030, 12g or 5.56////

RKDinOKC 12-28-2013 05:10 PM

They didn't have glass rear window until 02.

When the clear coat flakes off they go from shiny red, to dull pink.

Oh yeah, if you get sun screen on the black interior trim, like door pocket covers and center console, the black peels off like it got a sunburn. But the plastic under it is black so it's not too bad.
