Oh boy alternator problems!

At least the alternator on the 911 is not like some modern cars and totally hidden. After you have done once, the second time is easy on a 911.

Few if any cars can be easier to R&R an alternator than my El Camino. It it right on top and up front. I can probably do it in 15 minutes is I tried.

Dave, are ya gonna get it rebuilt locally or just swap it with a re-manufactured one?

Glen, The older Mopar are pretty easy as well. Disconnect the electronics and two bolts.

Yep, that is like the Elky. Disconnect the wire going to the battery, remove the adjustment hold down, remove the main pivot point bolt. The bracket on the alternator has to be swapped and that is real easy and then reverse the steps.

I usually take several other steps since I end up spray painting the bracket or other not critical steps "while I am in there" but that is only because it is my car and not a customer car. I charge several thousand dollars an hour plus parts to work on other peoples cars. So far I have not had any takers.

The alternator on my old Landy is really easy: disconnect the cable to battery, two bolts....
I haven't actually seen the alternator on the Lotus.....I'm sure it requires partially removing the engine...

One of the shows I enjoy is Wheeler Dealers. Ed China works on some weird vehicles. One of them he had to remove most of the front suspension on a car to see the alternator. It was hours of work to swap it out. :eek:

I guess some cars have the alternator buried in the intake valley so you have to remove the entire intake manifold to even get to the alternator. :eek::eek:

Eh, not as bad as I thought.....Looks to be about an hour out and an hour in for the Lotus alternator.....


Friggin timing belt on the other hand......it's a friggin hour just to check the damn thing.....I think book is 6 hours for replacement......realistically 8-9.......you've gotta remove engine mounts....

Don't even want to think about changing the water cooled alternator on the cayenne or pay for the high output one that would be needed to replace it. Think it's the starter that is in the cam valley.

Changing the starter on the Elky is not overly difficult as long as you have Joe around or a pet gorilla. The starter weighs about 200 lbs or so. (My mom told me a millions times not to exaggerate)

Getting the old starter off is easy. Getting the new heavy monster back on is the challenge. Once again, the 911 is easy. Just hug the transmission and do a "reach around" to get to the starter bolts. Of course that is because I have a 915 transmission. The G50 transmission cars have to have a partial engine drop.

I had mine done at a local shop and it has been in there for many years. I ended up with two defective "re-manufactured" units in a row. The parts store ended up giving my money back. I was not going to try three times.

At lunch time I went to get the new sticker for my license tag on the 911.

It took less than two minutes and cost me 22 bucks.

The chick was a fairly attractive intelligent capable employee. I know she was intelligent because she laughed at my banal comments that I was trying to make funny.

Took me a few minutes longer on the Cayenne, had to screw on the metal tag.

Hope everyone has had a good week, I am currently relaxing after spending a couple of hours making a couple of Indian curries to take to work tomorrow, one lamb madras curry and one boring Indian vegetarian curry, and also making some yummy naan breads to go with them.

About to go out to the local fair, and see if us Weed Wednesday peeps won any ribbons for our garden produce.
