Oh great. Management is letting the other server admin run amuck on our active directory. Me and the other admin before me put all actual people in a OU or Organizationcal Group based on the city they work in, then within that group they are stored in departments within that group. He is moving them all around and it makes no sense. More importantly it has no direct relation from the HR titles and departments they are grouped in by them. Lets make everything way more complicated than it needs to be!

The low pressure area from Jim went to Sid's place and now comes a glancing blow to northern Oklahoma. We have possible rain, and hail but most of it will go north. Or that is what they predicted last night. It is all subject to change of course. The last big bad round of storms that hit much of the Midwest and south formed over Oklahoma and move east.

There are two types of IT guys. Those that know what they are doing and others can follow along, and those that make things so confusing so they feel important because they don't really know anything. There are a lot of the latter group.

I have seen GPOs set to the default and then all but a couple OUs put in the deny permissions section. Why not just apply the GPO to the OU you want it for. Or, say you need a segregated LAN for people to cast to the TVs for activities and they just make a separate SSID that is hidden for the people to cast on, but use the same VLAN as the public and wonder why porn is getting cast to the TV. What part of segregated do they not understand? I ain't the smartest accordion in the Doppler radar, but wow some of htese people are nuts. Like the guy that thought RAM drives were so fast why not make it a boot drive. Um...

Went home last night and in the nice warm weather washed and waxed the DD. Thunderstorms today. I guess we won't be burning off the tree trimmings todnight.

Well, found some more stinky. IT VP wants to get rid of on-site Exhanes being used as MS intends for 365 mail routng.

At his last job they used an old Barracuda filter to relay internal emails to 365. so, he wants to get rid of the exchange on-site and have all the internal system talk directly to 365. Problem with that is most of the internal devices that are sending email cannot do SSL or encryption.

I tell him, great, we have a box running CommunigatePro as a list server. It can relay internal emails to 365 encrypted. CGP has been doing that for years. And as a matter of fact our proofpoint anti-spam system is setup on a CGP server itself.

Well, has decided want everyone using the list server to use MS Teams and killed the list server. AND have up up a copy of sendmail (that does no do SSL relay) as the 365 relay server. And are trying to setup a VPN tunnel frm our netork to the 365 network. LOL. Don't seem to understand the SSL TLS connection on 365 IS THEIR VPN connection for email.

So, recap. Shut down a mail server pepple are using listseerve on that can be an SSL 365 relay. To put up another server that kills the currentyl servces AND cannot do SSL 365 relay.

No wonder I was not included in the discussion.

Someone has drank the MS koolaid. Not that MS doesn't make some good stuff, but some of the "little things to make your life better" is stuff left behind so life does stay better.

I bet he also uses the $1k Monster HDMI cables too, looked so they self cancel the interference an allow bits to move faster.

Freaked them out. They decided to change OUs they put our 50 remote site users in while I was at lunch.
Updated my database to automatically put users in those OUs by Location and department. In 10 minutes, ha.

Firewall needs encryption. That is pretty much done for incoming VPN connections and not outgoing connections. At least noplace I can find settings because MS would have to provide a VPN connection to Office365.

We are going to Cox Gigabit for our internet connection. Think we went to 10GB backbone quite a while ago.

Many long years ago when the Commodore 64 was the best selling computer out, we had a group of guys that got together to talk computers, and the problems. With the C-64 all the components are just numbers. So the floppy drive was a 1541. The monitor was a 1701 and the modem had a number that I don't remember right now.

Anyway, three guys were in the guys kitchen area where the homeowner had his computer setup. His wife was in the kitchen cooking. We were having a legitimate conversation and she interrupted and accused us of "talking in code" so she would not know what we were really talking about. We all explained the numbers and what the meant and how it was way easier to say 1541 rather than floppy disk drive and so on. I still don't know if she believed us.

We learn to talk like that for Job security?

Went to visit a friend that worked at Apple in Cupertino. Their main office had four big buildigs with an open space in the middle. You had to go thru the build foyer's to get to the quad. And the quad was big enough for an outdoor stage and seating area along with a softball and vollyball field and outdoor seating area for their cafeteria that was more like a cafe.

Anyway every Friday a 4pm there was free food and drinks and a band. My friend said it was a social party so different groups could get togehter and maybe help each other with their projects. To keep things under wraps the items and projects were given name whle under develpment.. One computer/motherboard they named the Carl Sagan. He somehow heard about it and asked them to stop using his name. They did, but they changed the name to Stupid Astronomer. Carl Sagan took them to court. Of course, the judge threw it out. But, in the proceedings Apple's lawysers were put on court record calling Carl Sagan a stupid astronomer 16 times.

Well, your guys don't seem to think secure socket and encryption for the emails is important!

When I was at the IT conference last fall I was approached by a nice young lady who told me all her company could do for is to help with security and migration to O365. I said not as long as I was working here. She huffed and walked off like I insulted her. Maybe I triggered her and she had to find a safe place, I don't know.

Most of the clients using Outlook is encrypted with TLS. But devices like copiers, server apps etc that send data to users and groups is not. Relaying thru Exchange on-site does encrypt the data sent to 365. So do a LOT of other real email servers. But not basic sendmail when used as a relay. The really funny thing is that I was told we did not want to maintain a local server for this task and that is why the killed the CGP server. But they have a server setup with sendmail they are trying to get to make a VPN on Offie365. Could have just set the relay in CGP pointed of local devices to it (even sendmail.server.org) and been done with a real mail server that provides logging an everything proper. Has been running for 3 years with zero problems. Oh yeah, and CGP lets you use up 5 users and mailing lists Free.

Guess it's not a box from someone that if it has a problem you can call them. ie. no local responsibilty.

My favorites were always the 9 am Monday meeting that they’d tell me about at 815 that they wanted me to do two hours of data prep for. After a few times of that I finally told them to move the damn meeting or tell me what they wanted on a regular basis so I could come in early on Monday’s.

I hear the stories of "normal" guys working in corporate life. I feel the pain, but I can't relate directly. I always worked for small family businesses. Never in my live have a hierarchy of management. If I had a policy question, I went to THE boss and owner of the company.

Today I had a long meeting with the HR department, they sent me down to the sensitivity training department. I taught a class on burping and scratching goofing off as I am an expert. Sleeping with the bosses wife seems to keep everyone happy.
