My desktop was (still technically is) upstairs in my "office". Laptop was newer technology, so much faster and in a more central location downstairs.

Desktop finally was turned off and collected dust, perfectly happy with my laptop (okay, huge screen would be nice).... Linux server has issues, mess with it, but it's a goner -hardware, not worth fixing. Temp server in place, it to fails. Desktop to the rescue! Plug Linux drives in and voila! Server up and running as a temp fix until I get around to replacing the server.... It's been over a year now....

Laptop FTW! :p

if its free, have at it. but you didn't address my points. FTW.

however, think about it like this: how much did you spend on your laptop toy? how much more desktop computing power could have been purchased with the same amount of cash? then, how much more upgradeable is the desktop than the laptop, especially in terms of cash outlay?

A) Already stated, but free..

B) It's a Centrino, so there was a lot of room for proc power. But the laptop was replacing an older LT and was and still is the fastest computer in my house.

C) I have never upgraded a desktop, short of memory. By the time I start the upgrade list, I seem to end up with a whole new computer.

Again, I can't lug the desktop with me. With all of my stuff on my laptop, I can pull up w/e I need wherever I need to.

Listen, the decision is made, I'm not arguing this....

One more thing. At this point in time, I plan on replacing my current laptop with another when the time comes. I don't see much of a use for a desktop anymore. But that's my opinion, yours differs and that's okay. :)

Sorry YOU find it WEAK. But, it's how it is. I have no interest in sitting in a small office all day and night. I prefer the living room. It's not conducive to having a full desktop down here. I live on my laptop for work and play, it's just that simple and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. :)

perfect tool for your job, then.

porsche4life 12-27-2010 09:35 PM

Worked up? Not in the least.

Just confused as to when you became highstrung?

slodave 12-27-2010 09:43 PM

If I were to look at this from a neutral angle, yes, I would agree that a Desktop is far superior to a laptop in almost every way.

Yes, for me, the laptop is the perfect tool for my job (and play).

I play 0 games, so the latest and greatest vid cards are not needed. I mentioned a bigger screen, there is one other issue, but it is with this laptop and something I did not know was going to be an issue. Since it has a built in Intel graphics chip, it can't be calibrated easily and I can't use one of those Spyder units. I have issues with color calibration and Photoshop. So in this case, a desktop would allow for an vid card upgrade. Color has been sorted out now, but now that I know that limitation, the next laptop will have a better card.

what makes you think i am highstrung?

porsche4life 12-27-2010 09:59 PM

You usually aren't. Just got a little bit defensive when dave and I casually said desktops weren't our thing. I had one, I didn't like it.

Like I said, can't we all just get along?

nynor 12-27-2010 10:00 PM

defensive? how so?

porsche4life 12-27-2010 10:02 PM

Nope, the linux lappys are the ones I use for d-loading. This one is windows vista 64 bit.
I just don't like mac stuff and whine about any issues I ever have with them.
Different strokes.
If it werent for my ipod I would never load any mac stuff.
I have lots more problems than just linux. :D
