That helps for local wifi security, but doesn't help much when logging in somewhere else. Where mac addesses, login and password is copied and spoof they are you.
User ID and password is just getting too easy to hack.

Outback Porsche 06-03-2020 05:10 PM

That’s why I don’t use free access points

RKDinOKC 06-03-2020 09:48 PM

Yep. And have iphone set to ask before joining wifi networks. So only wifi it joins is my home wifi. Forces it to use cellular when out an about.

Evening all.

How is everyone coping with the OVID and disturbances I have seen on the news media?

Hope you are all well, I am still retired, still working on the 356. Steve is working from home with the Oz Defence Department he is enjoying the work from home time I think. Certainly the dog is happy with him being home all day, gives them both something to talk to ha ha ha.

Because of our Oz regulations over the COVID thing, we missed our 6 weeks away up north in the nice warm Northern Territory, Far North Queensland, and Western Australia. Oh well maybe next year.

Outback Porsche 06-04-2020 02:01 AM

Hi Azzy.

Warm days but cold nights up here and covid has been pretty much a non event (except for the six weeks that they shut the golf course down for).

GH85Carrera 06-04-2020 05:54 AM

Howdy Azzy, no real issues from either issues here. The China flu deaths are mostly in the nursing homes or prisons around here. The businesses are opening back up.

Lots of businesses will never survive the double whammy of closing under orders and then having the business damaged or destroyed by terrorists. We have had several peaceful demonstrations and virtually all Americans support peaceful protests as a basic human right. The media loves to blow anything way out of proportion.

I use a debit card. It is on a separate account. I only put money in that account to spend with the debit card.
With a credit card theifs get you credit limit, you don't have to pay it but they still get it.
With my debit card their is not any money or credit for the theifs to get.

The other thing he talks about is 2FA with no passwords. To log into anything you have to scan a QR code with your phone and it logs you in. It doesn't text or phone numbers that you have to repeat like most MFA. It is the opposite. It displays the code that your phone app scans and logs you in. The system is called Trusona. It is supposed to be none replayable. There is some stuff like google storage that requires and authentication app, but it still sends a code you type in and it only authenticates once instead of have to re-autheniticat each time you log in. Says he doesn't like biometric stuff because your fingerprint of facial recognition still makes a file with numbers that can be replayed. Oh yeah, he does not write checks, too easy to get your info from.

Saw him in person a couple years ago at Spiceworld where he gave a similar talk. Pretty nice guy. Some of the other talks were on how normal 2FA is easy to spoof. The guy from KnowBe4 spoofed another attendee's 2FA in about ten minutes.

Good to hear from you Azzy.

RKDinOKC 06-04-2020 10:22 AM

Sounds like all you need is a copy of the Trusona app to spoof it.

The way I understand Trusona works is...

You are presented with a Trusona login ie QR code graphic that it also sends to the Trusona server.
Scan the QR code with the Trusona app on your phone.
The app compares the QR code with the Trusona Server.
Shows you are logged in on the phone, and logs in on the login.

So guessing the app needed login and the phone app have unique identifiers that check each other, pass the one time code and log you in.

Just trying to figure out what makes Trusona different that 2FA where you are texted a code you enter in the login.

On a side note, my bank stopped letting me do bill pay from Safari this morning. Reports cookies blocked and they work for other things on the site.

flipper35 06-04-2020 10:55 AM

Yeah, those are fairly secure. He was talking about the ones where you get a text or code emailed and how easy they are to spoof. The ones he was talking about have other private and shared keys on the devices that makes it hard to spoof or duplicate. You could always steal the phone too.

He is actually a pretty sharp guy.

The year before Kevin Mitnick showed how easy it was to follo wa guy into a bathroom, pee (or pretend to) next to him and walk out with a copy of his HID.

GH85Carrera 06-04-2020 11:19 AM

I certainly don't think the top pros, or a government agency is really blocked from my data. I just hope that 99.999% of the other folks are.

I would love to have a trusted friend try to get into my system from out in the street with their WiFi. I suspect a really smart folks could just tap into the Cox Cable coax connection on the street. I always wonder what they could get to or if they can get past the router and the firewall it has, and the firewall on my computer.

GH85Carrera 06-04-2020 12:26 PM

We made a trip to Sam's again this morning. It is pretty much back to "normal" there. There was no line at all for the folks doing the curbside pickup. A few months ago it looked like they were giving out free money. We were in and out in short order.

RKDinOKC 06-04-2020 12:40 PM

If they really really want in, they can get in. Figure the best I can do is look like I don't have anything worth getting into.

Like when i had a 914. Left it with the targa top in the trunk and the trim off the radio with wires hanging out. Looked broken so was never messed with. And had an alarm that if you opened a door, no audible alarm or flashing lights to look for a disconnect, it sent me a page. Bob set the alarm pager off once. Knocked him off our 3 ft high front porch running out to check the 914. Think getting knocked thru the spiney cedar bushes must have hurt, he never tried it again.

That is one of the reasons why I use a debit card on a bank account that only has enough balance to cover each card charge. Not only is there no balance to take, it is not a credit card with any credit to steal.

Abagnale says to use credit cards and pay a monthly fee to have your credit monitored.

Have a guest wifi network with the same name as passworded invisible wifi network. It does not have a password and does not have access to anything. I give it access to the internet when Bob visits with his usually virus laden laptop. A couple of times I had to turn his internet access off because cox business called and he was sending virus'. They monitor business internet IPs for virus activity.

I have been using credit cards since the 1970s and a debit card for over 35 years. I have never lost a nickle. I have had the number stolen a several times over the decades and that money was always returned. The credit card companies have great fraud departments.

The most annoying part was having a card stopped due to fraud, and having to set up a new card with the places that charge me automatically.

Recently my business partner ordered some 2TB USB 3.0 thumb drives that looked promising. They sent us a box of crap. Just electronic flotsam and not one thing that was usable for us. I called the credit card company and they took the charge off, but put it back when the vendor squawked. So I sent email and explained it. Once again, the charge was removed and put back. So I called the Credit card company to find out WTF was going on.

In the end I had to send an analog letter, and some photos of the crap, and prints of the same images I had emailed before. It took a month, but the charges were reversed, and and we got the money back. I gave the box of crap to my business partner since he ordered them.

The credit card and debit card folks have my back. I simply don't worry about it.

We are off the to the largest plant nursery around her this morning. I can't image were she is going to put anymore plants, but she seems to squeeze them in somewhere.

RKDinOKC 06-05-2020 06:42 AM

Mertnin

Think it's a Friday, but sure seems like yet another Saturday?

GH85Carrera 06-05-2020 08:15 AM

It ain’t Friday yet. Not till tomorrow.

We somehow faked out the nursery system. The plants she “needed” were on aisle 1 at the front. We walked right to them, loaded up the cart, went to checkout and no line. Gone in under 5 minutes. Normally we wander aimlessly and have to go down every aisle.

RKDinOKC 06-05-2020 08:28 AM

my electronic devices indicate today is Friday, June 5th, 2020.

GH85Carrera 06-05-2020 08:32 AM

Dang if ya ain't right!

TGIF. Maybe it is Saturday all the time for me now, or almost.

My business partner is out flying a small project. I had to fill out the wire transfer info for them to pay us, and send a W-9 and then send a check to the airplane insurance folks. Almost 30 minutes of actual work. Back to Pelican.

I will be slaving away later this afternoon uploading the files to the client via FTP.

The real issue is the time inversion over here. This morning I got up to pee at 3:00 AM and went to lay down and a few seconds later the alarm went off and it was 7:15 AM. So I guess I was time traveling again.

RKDinOKC 06-05-2020 01:31 PM

Had lunch at 11:30am then suddenly it was 3pm! Not time travel as much as missing time. Wonder if i got visited by ETs or something. Did see any strange lights flying around or any almond eyed or reptilian beings.

GH85Carrera 06-05-2020 03:21 PM

We braved the restaurant scene for dinner for the first time. We actually walked in, sat down, ordered or food, and they custom made it, and brought it to the table and we ate 1/2 of it and had leftovers. Burp.

In the very center of downtown Edmond. It is right on the corner of Main and Broadway. Great Italian food.
