US insurance for snowbird-types ?

Only in OT may I find an answer, google is powerless...

Guys, my parents are european citizens and live in FL 3 months out of the year, they bought a car to stop paying for rentals. Bad idea....

I thought of buying the car from them but my coverage only "covers" them 12 days. Their US insurance is exorbitant - like 17year old drunk teen pricey : (No US license, if they got one they could not keep it as a non-resident anyway, proof of prior coverage is hard to get translated in english, too, big PITA) ...

Do you know of any company that has experience with this sort of situation ? They only need coverage for 3 months (they have 40+y of driving experience on the autobahn and autoroutes), and only need minimal theft coverage when the car sits 9 months out of the year... Any company you know of that deals with that ? Like a job relocation thing...

failing that, I'll make them sell the damn thing... it's like $200 a month for sitting unused in a garage !

Some reason you can't just buy a car and have it added to your policy?

yup, the aforementioned 12 days limit... They need 3 months of coverage, 9 months of theft only.. It's gonna be tough to find apparently!

How will the insurance company know how long they've been driving it?

Generally you set coverage at a minimum when unused, then you call to re-establish full coverage when they are here... That's how we're doing it right now, but the difference (progressive) is like between highway robbery and mob-extorsion ;-)

There's gotta be something like that for relocating executives or something... If not I'll have them sell the car and rent again, it's not worth $2400 a year for good drivers with zero accidents...
