talk to me about a sink food grinder

I know you guys pretty much have em as standard in the US home, in Europe though, they are nowhere to be seen. I used them when i was in the US, brilliant stuff, dump yer crap in the sink, let the tap run, push the button, gone.

Not sure why they aren't popular in Europe, i think it's something to do with waste disposal regulation, which frankly i couldn't care less off... if i eat the foods and poop em out... they get to process the waste anyway, it's just smellier on delivery... right?

Found a local website that has the Insinkerator...ISE 55
0,55 HP Dura-Drive®

* heavy-duty inductie motor.
* Stainless steel grinder ring
* Stainless steel rotating grinde
* Overload protection
* Permantly lubricated
* Quick-Lock® fastening for easy installation
* Jam-Buster® wrench to fix blockages
* "Quite Sound Reduction System".

http://www.insinkerator.com/product/product.php?id=13&template=i&?10,1,3,10

costs about 230 euro's...

or hte ISE 45, similar with .045 HP
185 euro's

There are others, but a lot more expensive

ISE 75
with auto reverse grinder
.75 hp motor
strainless steel grinder housing

640 euro's

Is that a known brand/manufacturer for Food grinders?

I used their "what grinder do you need" and it came up with the 55 version for my needs...
What could be the difference in price for the .75 HP variant?
Is cheaper in this case going to turn out to be weaker and not long lasting enoug?
Do i need .25 HP more to grind my foodwaste? (single, just me to cook for)

That sounds like a heavy-duty commercial unit to me.

I spent around $100 USD on mine a couple of years ago. Installation took about an hour, though it would probably take you longer as you'd have to move the drain pipe slightly. They are also built to take the wastewater from a dishwasher and they plug in under the counter.

230 euros...what is that about $170? my gut tells me that is kinda high, but i dont know. i think something like that would be less than $100 here. i have the same brand, and i have been known to abuse the thing.

You are definitely buying the Caddilac of garbage disposals. Same one here would cost you a third of what you are paying. Unfortunately it is only a 110 volt version. .55HP is all you will need to grind up everything except a corpse.

ok, so the conclusion is, .55 hp will do fine or even the .45 version?
And it's good equipment, no crappy brand

i expected it to be more expensive then what you guys would have, since there's the fact that it's bogstandard equipment in the US kitchen... And they have to import low volumes , slightly modified for Euro kitchens... I wasn't feeling like busting out 650 euro's on it, but 230... i can live with....

Mine would have been roughly $70 Euros. Most garbage disposals in the U.S. are .25 HP. I splurged for a .34 HP. .55 HP is massive overkill IMO.

to bad i can't just have you guys buy and ship one over, but it just won't work with 220 or fit our euro sink's...

They are taking a massive profit on those .75 versions, i've seen prices on other local sites for about 350 euro's, others for 650 euro's... seriously, that's a blatant ripp off...can't find the .45 version any cheaper though, i think that's the limit, import, shipping, margin... little difference between the different models, so it's easier to do a ripoff on the already more expensive units...although from what i hear, it would be to much for the home , and they aren't the professional units for restaurants either...

think i'll go with the .45 at 185 euro's then... can't wait to get it , no more mucking about with vegetable and other food leftovers in the sink...

Yes the .45 will be fine for your use. If you send a bunch of soft food down it then at least once a week throw in some egg shells or a few ice cubes to clean all the gunk off the blades.

Sometimes the garbage disposal/insinkerator is perfectly capable of grinding up the food waste, but the waste then clogs up at a particularly restrictive bend of the downstream plumbing. You might want to test - soak and mash up some food stuff (1 cup of stale bread crumbs, say) and dump it, all at once, down your drain with the water running. If your plumbing won't handle it then you may not get that much benefit from a garbage disposal.

I think they are handy devices, but not that much handier than a simple drain strainer. And you use a strainer with a garbage disposal anyway, to catch forks and spoons etc.

Every now and again they get stuck on something hard (peach pit, etc) and then you have to reach in, remove the jamming bit, and press the reset button.

I have one but wouldn't care if I didn't.

I think that is the same unit I put in this year, Stijn. Yes, that is a well-known brand.

Does your kitchen also feature an automatic dishwasher? If so, take heed when you are installing the grinder. A very common oversight is when you attach the drain line from the dishwasher to the grinder. In the grinder, there's a cast plug that you have to knock loose and remove. If you don't, your dishwasher will back up and won't drain at all.

You'll find out there are limitations - you can't just throw anything in there - but yeah, they are really convenient and useful. Many municipalities in the US also ban them due to environmental/wastewater/public waterworks limitations issues. Usually means the contractor can't put one in new construction...but the homeowner just goes out and buys one and puts it in. As of yet, there are no kitchen sink police (yet).

yeah, have dishwasher, no problem, i'll just have it connected downstream. or just split the pipes in a Y, one for each...

My plumbing will take it... i currently "mash" a lot of crap through the sink holes anyway, those chunks aren't ground, and they are gone anyway...

I second this - I have one now that stopped working, and I have no plans to replace it. If you have older plumbing (or even if you don't), you have to be very careful about what you shove down there. I've found that it's much more convenient to just throw things away, and take out the garbage if they are stinky things.

I'm planning on replacing my sink soon, and I will not be installing a garbage disposal.
