Porsche 917 Vintage Photo Gallery

To honor the 40th anniversary of the Porsche 917, SCD produced an incredible 25 picture photo gallery of the famed beast. Great photos and stories behind them.

I can still barely understand how small these cars are. 914's TOWER over 917's. Take a twelve cylinder engine and transmission, and lean a reclining driver against the front of the engine. That is the length of a 917.

Unfortunately, I've never seen a real one in person.

In-car YouTube vid of a 917 lapping LeMans.

It would be 100 times better without the EuroTechnoKrap sound track, but at least it doesn't cover up all of the engine sound.

I do believe that's a 956 or 962. I've seen that video with sound ( I have no sound here at work) and you can hear a waste gate.

That picture is almost laughable...it's sooo tiny, but such a frigging beast nonetheless. Much more attractive to me as well. Mighty impressive.

917

Having never seen a 917 in person, I thought they were larger than they actually are . This picture perfectly puts the size into perspective. WOW! , what a surprise!

I have posted this before, but I think it is worth a repost...At the Rennsport Reunion III, as we were leaving the track after the driver "presentation" Friday night, we stopped into the "917 garage". We were virtually alone with 21 or 22 (I forget) 917s. It was amazing. The 1st 2 photos were taken at night when we were leaving. The others were taken earlier in the day.

The 20 car was used in the movie LeMans & is now owned by Seinfeld.

I love them all, but the white one is particularly cool. It is has been owned almost since new by Chuck Stoddard. I think he said he paid something like $20,000 for it! What I really like about it is it is just as it came from the factory. No sponsor decals/paint. Pure 917. Very, very cool!
