Is this 911 as big a steal as it sounds?

I have a lead on a 911 SC coupe with 120k miles on it. Apparently has had the engine rebuilt as well as the tranny. Runs and drives, inspection current. The guy recently lowered his asking price to $10k.

If I can get it for $9.5k, that's a steal for a running SC right? I haven't really been in the market and looking and this one just fell in my lap. All I know is I sold my 84 Targa with 65k miles on it 2 years ago for $14.5k...

9.5k isn't crazy low. If it has rougher paint/interior, thats reasonable.

Agree on the PPI, but I'd want a good rebuild by 120K. My tranny was certainly shot by 100K. Then again it had three years of track time on it...

pics would help, but average/driver SCs are worth around $8K - $10K. This one having the motor and 915 rebuilt sounds above average, but only if done by a competent shop. If the motor and trans were done by MM, it's worth $4K.

What does it have for wheels? any upgrades in the rebuild? interior condition? paint? regular maintenance and repair receipts?

Good deal, but not screaming deal. I test drove a nice '83 Targa with 103k that was selling for $10k. Nice overall condition, original paint, really good interior. Ran and drove well, records since new. There seem to be many SCs in that price range, I was surprised as well.

This looks like a bigger deal to me. Does the AWD cause any extra problems

Yeah I was wondering about who did the rebuilds as well. Sellers says he has all receipts so I should be able to sort that out.

Car has new tires, tensioner upgrades, turbo tie tods, stock fuchs. Paint sounds like a 10 footer type of situation, seller says he thinks it is original paint. He has receipts and records dating back to purchase.

It sounds like a reasonable car, I have yet to look at it in person though. The red flag in my mind is the rebuilds.

If I bought the car it would be a driver for a couple years with an eye towards eventually doing an RS or RSR mild clone, maybe an engine upgrade too, although if the rebuild was done right it may not need anything. Nothing hard core trackish, just a solid driver with cosmetics done.

Like I said, I really wasn't in the market right now, but I saw this deal and thought it looked like a pretty good price for the car described.

there's a guy in Belgium , who has an add out, for an SC roller chassis..
ain't nothing on it, except 4 wheels, and the stuff the wheels bolt on to.

he's asking 8000 euro's...

I'm like wtf ?!? you can find complete SC's including engine and body panels for that price
ok, they will need work, but that's still a lot better then a gutted chassis

A very nice SC coupe with all maintenance records and just over 100K on the clock (IIRC) traded hands here in the Rogue Valley for $7,500. The fellow had it for sale for some time, kept dropping the price. When I finally got enough money together to consider it, Steve contacted the guy. Too late.

It would have been cool to have a nice 911. I always buy beaters and fix them up. They wind up nice but don't start that way. Always mucho labor involved to get them nice. Oh well. Maybe someday - LOL!

Is the market just super soft right now because of the economy? Like I said, just a couple years ago I would have thought a decent SC would go for $12-13k...

Yes, the market is very soft. I can get an 85 Targa in decent shape that has a nasty oil leak for $8500.

A bit more info this morning.

Current owner has had the car for about a year and a half. Says he bought it to do an IROC replica but economy has him thinking again. He says no wrecks but paint has lots of chips in it. Does leak a bit of oil from the return tubes which are collapsible, I'm guessing from the rebuild. He redid the brakes when he bought the car, says he had a PPI done at that time but no leakdown.

Of course the other option is to call my brother in law and see if he still wants to sell the '73 911E that has been sitting in his garage for 4 years not running....

That is my thought as well. I also saw several places where people have gotten similar cars for somewhere in the $8's. I'll keep watching, if he drops the price lower I might look at it but I think I'll sit tight for now.

Thanks for the help guys.

if I had the money, I'd seriously consider this:

Instead I'm hopping on the bike and looking at a 73T that has some tasteful mods to it.

lot of good cars out there Rick.

+1

I know these cars had some issues - the 4 even more than than the 2. The fact that's it's a East coast car could also a negative - 3rd owner said HE didn't drive in the snow but the prior 2 is unknown.
