Got my braces off today!

I must say after almost 3yrs with metal in mouth it feels quite odd to be without. I like it.

Going in to see my Family dentist next week for a checkup and to determine when they want to take my wisdom teeth. I'm holding out for next summer now. Then back to the ortho to get my retainer.

Any recommendations on Whitening? My Dentist has recommended the Crest White Strips.

If the wisdom teeth have to go, get them out ASAP. The older you are, the more difficult it is. It's not nearly as bad as everyone says! I was eating Taco Bell burritos within 24 hrs.

I would rather not have to deal with that hassle right at the start of college.

congrats, wish i could have gone through with em as a kid, but got kicked in the face by a horse, double jaw fracture, and instead of having the follow up done by an orthodontist, a regular ol' dentist did the follow up... and got it wrong... my lower jaw was to small ("healing" a fracture takes away from "Growing", with a full range of teeth, and dentist just tried to force things in line, which couldn't work with an undersized jaw

At age 10 you ain't got much control over things like that... But at age 33 i'm stuck with a mess...

just to give you an idea, folks think i'm a miserable sod, because i hardly ever smile..
Which isn't really because i don't smile , but because my lower jaw is to short, and my lower teeth rest behind my uppers...So for me to give a wide smile, i have to open up my piehole so much it won't even look like a smile.

Every time somebody picks a fight with me, i say the same thing:
Bring it on punk, start swinging, i got kicked in the face by a horse , and i can sure as hell take a punch by a mule.

I secretly hope they will do something good enough to end up paying for a good dental makeover, but for some reason they think i must be a tough sob to call em out to fight me like that, when in fact i'm not much of a fighter at all.

When I was a kid my parents begged me to agree to get braces. I refused. I fought over than more than any other issue with my parents in the 17 years I lived under that roof.

I never got em. Now looking back... well, I still wouldn't' put my younger self through it.. but boy would it had helped.

My bottom row of teeth aren't nice. They are all still normal to the plane, not crooked, but the are staggered in some strange dual-row looking arrangement. Since they are at least nice and the same height its hard to notice.

However I have adopted the practice of never showing teeth when smiling. Never. No photo of me taken since I was 9-10 years old shows me smiling where you can see the bottom row of my teeth.

To align them with braces would take years and years, and I don't actually think it would be possible without pulling one or two (not enough room). I'm hoping eventually to be able to afford to get some serious work done, getting one or two of them pulled and have fake ones set in place or something.

On the wisdom teeth thing- good luck. Everyone I've known who's had them pulled hated the process. I still have mine, all 4. They fit just fine. No problems whatsoever. They are there for a reason right?!

I had 4(COUNT EM 4) pulled with just numbing I didn't get any gas to have the braces. It SUCKED. This is why I really want to avoid the Wisdom teeth. I know he will put me under for that and the procedure wont hurt but I will be worthless for as long as painkillers are needed because they knock my on my azz. I would prefer that happen when I don't have to get up for class.

I had my wisdom teeth out the summer before I started college, 2004. Top ones were definitely causing some pain and I was glad to get rid of them. In hindsight the bottom ones weren't ready to come out yet and caused me some major pain and suffering for 2 or 3 days after having the procedure done (Didn't use any major drugs either, only Advil or Tylenol). I probably should have waited till winter break or the next summer vacation to have the bottoms done. After a week i was doing fine and back to my regular self.

I just got my wisdom teeth pulled....eight years after my dentist started telling me to get them pulled. I was also busy, not with school but I had a kid on the way, moved, new job etc. In the end me not wanting to deal with it at the time cost me a lot of pain, swelling and about a $1000 more because they were all impacted. Sidney, don't make the same mistakes I made on those wisdom teeth because life will only get more busy.

Good luck,
Shawn

So without me digging through wikipedia... what is the most common problem people have with wisdom teeth? My dentist always asks me how mine feel... I say they feel great.. they've been in for a long time now and haven't done anything but be teeth. The dentist has never mentioned anything else and that's that.

I had all 4 of my WT pulled the same day, about a month before I started college. The top two had come in completely, and I never felt any discomfort. They were slightly angled out which I guess they thought was bad.

The bottom two never caused me any discomfort, but they told me that they were never going to come out and were pointed forward. To get those two out, they had to cut through the gums, and then cut into the bone, break them up into little pieces and then take the pieces out.

They asked me if I wanted a local or general anesthetic. I told them to knock my azz out. I had pain pills, antibiotics, and pills for swelling that I think I took for a week. I was eating the same day of the surgery. The next couple of mornings I felt a little crappy, but it wasn't bad.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled one at a time as they came through the gums. I had the 1st one done when I was in high school. The other two came out over the next two years. No surgery, just a big pair of pliers and Novocain. I only had three wisdom teeth. The 4th one never did appear. I am not complaining. My wife says I only had three wisdom teeth because I am such a wise ass.

Sidney, I am sure you are thrilled to lose the metal mouth.

you stop licking the front of your teeth yet?

get the wisdom teeth out. i had 4 impacted and i opted for all 4 to come out at once. i had a great surgeon who was on the conservative side. he had me doing stretching exercises right after the procedure. he said i couldnt go to sleep until i could fit 3 fingers in my mouth. then he me follow up with daily visits to his office to check for infection, and a cleaning. it was CAKE!

now stop licking your teeth.

Front teeth feel all slimy? Those 3 years of metal could be a waste if you don't get the wisdom teeth pulled. I only had to wear braces for 50 weeks, but putting off getting my wisdom teeth (4, only 1 impacted) pulled rearranged my mouth. I let it go for a long time, maybe 3 years of puffy cheeks twice a year. Do it now.

Ok my wisdom teeth aren't bothering me at all. They are just there in the Xray. I won't put this off more than a year. My dentist is good and I trust him to take them out. I am getting a retainer that I will have to wear for quite some time so that should hold my teeth in place before the wisdom teeth come out.

No I still haven't stopped running my tounge over my teeth.

I had my wisdom teeth removed in the early 90s, I hadn't realised how much pain that I had been in, then turns out, a 5th one popped out last year, had it removed and now all done.. Do it on a Fri, that way you have the weekend to recoupe, it is much easier early..

So you are the lucky one that got my missing wisdom tooth. I like three more than 5 when it comes to extra teeth! Sorry for your extra pain.

All of em there, just as they've meant to be for tens of thousands of years...
