Shipping car from DC to Ca
Anyone knows how much it would cost to ship a car from the east coast (wash.DC) to Ca?
The car is a roller so it does not need an enclosed trailer just wondering how much is going to add to the price of the car. Any leads?Thank you. Adrian S. |

I paid DAS to move my 911 from MN to Seattle. $1500, but that includes extra insurance and 'top loading'. I was very happy with the service.

I recently used Express Auto Shipping (www.expressautotransport.com) to move a LR Disco from NC to CA. Very professional, Disco was here in 5 days, open carrier = lots of bug guts (easy detail remedy), for $1100 pickup/deliver door to door. Can't compain.

Reviving an old thread.
Need to ship a car from Chicago area to Phoenix. Any other ideas? $1000 to $1500 seems to be a bit much. For this kind of money will drive the puppy.

I've used DAS too (and I may very well use them again for my upcoming move). They're fine and do a pretty good job. And you can get online quotes, which is nice.

Joe,
Depends on the car and value. When I moved to TX I used a little guy I found via a broker. He does the NY to TX run once a week and hauls only 3 cars at a time on an open trailer. Shipped two cars with him, the 911 and my beater Bronco, on two separate trips, $600 each. I had originally planned on driving the 911 down so wear n tear + fuel, between driving and hauling open was comparable. Was winter so hauling was easier for me. 3rd car, the 55' 190SL, I shipped with Horseless Carriage enclosed at $1,500. So deepening on value of car go with a small privateer or a big name high end carrier. The options in between can be risky. You want to know that the car goes on and stays on the same rig end to end. Most damage occurs during loading/unloading. A lot of companies use the FedEx model. Pick up cars at various locations and drop em in a common yard, then they make up loads going to a common destination. Efficient for them but it's not unheard of for a vehicle to sit for weeks at a time waiting for a big enough load headed your way. Considering your work schedule that may be highly inconvenient for you. Probably the most important question you want to ask.

I have been discussing the option of buying an enclosed trailer for doing just these types of moves for people. Yanno, one way, high end car transport. For those that have used these services, was it only for relocation, or would you use that kind of service again in the future?

SM,
Thanks for the info. For a bit more info on the situation. This is not a high value car, its a 1985 Jag XJ that is in mint condition. Picked it up for $1000 from a guy who just wants it gone. Its prolly worth $4-5000 but still its not a really nice 911 or the like. Targa, How in the world do you FedEx a car?

My experience in 2007 with DAS was less then abysmal. Among other issues, they pulled the key tumbler out of the ignition switch! And on top of that it took an extra week to get it here. Customer service was worthless.

Not using FedEx. They want over $1600 to start then the extra charges go on...

Joe, I would consider a fly and drive if it's on a weekend.

Targa,
Yep, and what killed it was almost a 20% surcharge for fuel alone. Rick, Going to do that. The PO was trying to get me to trailer it, but turns out that he is a doctor type who said "only way I ever drive cross country is by rental car" so there is more going on there. Have a friend who wants to make the drive, so will send him up on SouthWest and he will visit family on the way back. I have two free tickets on SWA, so thats a big help. If the price was under $1000 would think about it but not for $1600 or so.

Wow, you weren't kidding about FedEx. A quote to have them ship my 944 was $2300. By contrast, DAS's quote was $900.

Yea, I don't really see much alternative. There's no work here and there doesn't look to be any for a while (longer than I can hold out financially). I've got an offer back there, so unless something remarkable happens I think I'm gone pretty soon. I could maybe last another year or so here, but I just don't see things picking up in this area in that time. It's dead as a doornail here. I'm not about to turn down an offer in the hope of a "maybe" coming up sometime in the future. Sucks, but I think it's the right move.
I hate winter, but I think I've got enough car projects to keep myself busy and amused during those awful months.

Hope that things work out. To tell the truth aviation is not an industry that lends itself to staying in one place. Took living in 8 different countries for me to figure that out!
