i love my brother, but sometimes...DAMN! safety issue.

my bro has a buddy with a texas ranch. he frequently visits to hunt and fish the area. 80% is from treestands. i asked him which safety harness he wears..."i dont wear one..."

WTF? i told him which brand i thought was best, and lectured him a bit. he is younger than myself, it is my God given right..heheh. anyways, he invited me. i called to confirm if it is the same place with treestands. yup. i asked him if he got a harness...nope. get this, he said he would make one with some SWAT issued webbing and rope. again, WTF? needlesstosay, i just ordered TWO harnesses. i will give him one as a very early holiday gift. hard to imagine us from the same genepool sometimes. he has a few friends coming too. i bet i bring the only two harnesses. all of them are cops.

i even consider it selfish not to wear one. 12 - 15 feet up, you probably wont die..........

ok, vent over.

Growing up with a woods for a backyard, I don't understand what the big deal is. Do you wear a safety harness when you climb a tall ladder too? Do kids these days wear safety harnesses when they play in treehouses?

My guess is he's not in the stand long enough to fall asleep. Gets his pig limit early and goes home :-)

I grew up hunting whitetails with a bow in Indiana before tree stands were available, Tree stands were made with stolen 2x4's and 16 sinkers, certainly with out harnesses. I'm still alive, I ware them now because it makes sense. I also ware a helmet on the ATVs & Motor cycles because I have kids. I have friends that don't , it's like helmet laws, it your head. I stopped trying to save the non users. I have many cowboy buddies they just have less to loose.

Thats all well and good when you're a kid. But I have a wife and little girl, and it sure changed my perspective on the issue. I don't want my family to have to take care of me as a paraplegic for the next 30 years. It ain't about you.....

My neighbor broke his neck in a fall climbing over a fence--paralyzed from the chest down, bound to a wheelchair and trying to stay healthy (had a major heart attack two months ago).

Everything you do on a daily basis is dangerous. Some things are higher risk than others, but any one of them could kill you just as dead...or worse.

Well then it is a good thing you do not make a living as a construction worker... Those guys must not care about their families. (I also assume you no longer risk you're life on motorcycles, ski slopes or other unnecessary hobbies then either since you have a wife and a kid. )

That's not what he is saying. All he is saying is that if you are going to participate in higher risk activities, you should take reasonable steps to mitigate that risk.

get busy living or busy dying. Probably from a statistics point of view - the drive to the ranch is the most dangerous portion of the journey. When I hunt - sort of like driving on the track - I am way to charged up to sleep.

There is no reasonable step to mitigate the risk of riding a motorcycle, or bunji jumping, or whatever else.

It's dangerous no matter what you do, period.

Only to be topped by:

"2nd place is the 1st loser"

"It is time for me to stop being afraid and others to start"

Those quotes always worked well for me when reviewed just prior to a big MX race.
