load test - battery

just bought a used car for winter use & am wondering about the battery's ability and longevity

the PO gave the car meticulous csre but was not a 'car guy'

I saw several load tests done by the mechanic where he had it serviced

- does that tell me anything?

if so, what?

and how long ago would these be valid or of any use?

thx

Sounds to me like they were looking for something. Maybe just an excuse to replace the battery. Maybe chasing and alternator type problem. Have you got any receipts for any new parts following one of those tests?

Around here you can take your battery to any FLAPS and get a free load test. Should be a good guess as to whether or not is will last the winter. I think you can also buy a tester for cheap, (it's nothing more than a heating element and a gauge)

Also, another good indication is to look on the battery and find the date of manufacture. 5-7 years and your batter is probably done.

Lastly, the your best bet is to carry around either jumper cables or a boost pack and when/if the time comes just jump it and drive to the FLAPS and get a new battery.

Depending on how cold it gets where you are the purchase of a battery warmer or a block heater may not be a bad idea.

1. Take the battery out of the car.
2. Make sure the water level in each cell is where it is supposed to be. Use distilled water if you need to add some.
3. Charge the battery fully.
4. If you can find out where the PO bought that battery (or if it was in the car when he bought it, you can find out online who in your area sells that brand), take it there (in another vehicle) to have it load tested. They'll likely give you the best pro-rata replacement price if it's on its last legs.

They might require that the original purchaser be the one who brings it in to get the pro-rata thing.
