THEORY: Own a Porsche? Likely you also own a Subaru.
I have a theory. It seems most all my friends who own a Porsche also own a Subaru [or a BMW -- or an Audi Quattro or they want to...]. Maybe this is because you can't haul a$$ over gravel, snow and dirt without tearing up your nice 911 and you get a sub-con-science* need to have a vehicle for these things. Let's see your Porsche and your Subaru [or etc.]. Doesn't have to be in the same photo, but let's see if my theory rings true.
* sub-con-science means that you have scientifically analyzed your vehicular needs (well, ok, "desires") and realized deep in the depths of your hidden Freudian Jungophilic limbic system that the best way to rid yourself of absolute LUST for ripping over broken ground (without skis) is in an old $wd or AWD beater. Something you can tear apart because it is cheap and sub-con. Now, that's science. |
In the 70's and 80's if you owned a Porsche, you should also have an Audi. It never got out of my system.
|
Not a bad theory. I have a Saab for the reasons you list (sort of). For those who don't remember, Saab rally cars used to be common. http://www.saabmuseum.com/rally/index.html
As much fun as it might be, I don't drive my 911 in snow or on gravel/dirt roads. (Maybe if my 911 wasn't shiny black...) I do, however, have a set of dedicated winter tires for my Saab. Oh, and if I had to replace the Saab (so far it has "only 149K miles, so it may be awhile) it would probably be with a WRX 5-door. After driving the 911, I really don't feel like driving a car with the ignition key in a "normal" location. ;) |
Just own a Volvo 240DL now.... but, back in the day I drove a Subaru -- "Sammy Subaru" -- for a short period of time!

Jeep Cherokee. Five of 'em. Never a Subie. Tried a couple of Audis; BMWs, etc. What the heck, I've had about 30 911s, so I've typically had one type of hauler or another as a DD. But never a Japanese car.
|
Thats me. Other car is a kid hauling snow pitching camp gear hauling 2006 legacy GT turbo wagon. ;)

Also, Subaru made some of the recent Saab wagons and I think sedans...
|
I do have an AWD for the winter, and it goes like stink in the snow. Not a Subie, however...

yeah I have had a few audis over the years.. a TT and a S4. I picked up a 2008 Subaru STI on new years eve and it honestly blows my past Audis away...

I actually just bought this Allroad for my wife/family. It's my first ever Audi. A six speed manual and it's really in exceptional condition. Wot a beast!

Wife used to have an Outback. Traded it on an X3 6-speed. Oh, and I drive a truck (see the other thread: Porsche owners also own trucks).
|
Good theory....I have an '06 Subaru Outback as well as an '86 Ford F250. I guess I support both the truck and subaru theories!
|
I have an '05 Outback and '89 Carrera....

We have an A6 besides the Porsches. Never owned a Subaru.
|
Not me. Looked at them but wife hated the look of the forester and the outback had zero rear seat room. Not to mention the standard engine was a dog. I thought the forester was a well thought out vehicle though (but for the motor) and could certainly live with a turbo model.
Have yet to see a well driven subie at an auto-x event. Gearing looks to be wrong or something. Maybe the turbo takes a while to spool up? Dunno but just not impressive when i've seen them. Absolutely no desire to own an Audi. And, IMHO, if a 911 owner wants to go fast over gravel he already has a fantastic vehicle to do it with! |
I have a 89 Vanagon and it is getting a Subaru 2.2 transplant now, it will be running the new motor this month. Does that count?
|
Me: 2001 Outback and '78 SC (also a Dodge Dually)
|
Had a WRX, it was fun, fast, cheap and never died.. which I traded in for an M5 that was fun, fast, expensive and liked the shop.
|
Ha, I fit that to a T. My DD is a first MY '96 A4 bought when new and my wife's is an '05 Legacy GT. Now that is a screamer.
|
In a past life [pre-kids] I had a carrera coupe and subbie p/u..... Now my hauler is a TDI Wagon; Pcar distant blood relative and soon to be boss..........
|
I conform.........
83 911 SC 04 Outback I hate conforming! |
2006 E90 330i - surprisingly decent in the winter with snow tires, but useless for hauling stuff...
|
Here's the winter ride I just picked up. 1999 Legacy Outback,214K miles and bent valves. Timing belt skipped when the camshaft seized temporarily. I've got it torn down to the heads and will be sending them out for inspection and replacement of the valves. I paid $300. I hate winter but this should make it tolerable. A beater with a heater!

No Subie - used to, may again
No truck - utility trailer instead No Ducati - Honda VFR I fail all of the "theory, if you own a 911, you _________" threads I've seen |
A Subaru WRX (or Saabaru) was under review for a DD. Premium-only fuel and relatively poor gas mileage nixed it. Instead, got a Saturn Astra 5-spd. 30MPG no matter how I drive it, and lots of fun to drive despite the anemic 138HP. Corners incredibly well given the Eagle LS tires on it. I hope it holds up for the long haul ...

The obvious solution is that you guys need to sell the boring scooby and get a beater 911. |
AWD is very useful for snow...
I'd like to have ESC too. then there are the power windows, remote door locking, auto trans., etc. -- all good for a DD and a snow car, but not possible on a beater 911. |
Yep, see my sig. On my second Forester currently; first was a 2000 S in black/gray. While I don't enjoy having to use premium fuel and the fuel economy could be better, the Forester XT has to be the best all-rounder I've ever owned in terms of performance, reliability and utility. Makes a good Porsche parts hauler, too.

While I love AWD, a big part of what initially drew me to Subarus was the boxer engine. I grew up worshipping Porsches and their boxer engine. Then down the road I became interested in rally racing, and AWD kind of became required, especially with the mountain lifestyle I have lived for most of my adult life.
Do date I have owned 16 Subarus and 9 Porsches (currently own 4 Subarus and 5 Porsches). There hasn't been a single car in my driveway without a Boxer engine since 2000. |
Many Porsche's, no Subies. A few Mazdas (MX-6GT, MX-5) and Toyotas (MR2-Turbo, Land Cruiser) but mostly BMW and the Stuttgart products.

S6 + 911
Cool thread.
I have a 1995 S6 Avant, one of 400 imported for the year. It has an MTM stage 1 chip, Stebro stainless exhaust and some RS2 goodies on it. Yes it's fast. And it hauls a ton of stuff. It's a very nice compliment to the '75 targa which has no heat, can't haul much of anything, but is very, very easy to parallel park in tiny places. Which is why I use the 911 around town, and the S6 for longer trips. I'm in Vail now with the S6 (der Home Depot vagon) and the 911 is back down on the front range, so you guys will have to wait for pics, but I'll post some.:) --- Tom '74 targa |
87 Carrera
05 Saabaru Aero (WRX) 06 Honda VFR (DD) Saabaru is nice, but honestly, I miss my '97 GTI-VR6. Not nearly as fast, but directionally more stable on the highway, torquey all the time, and a perfect size |
87 Carrera, 04 WRX.
