Country, could go either way,
Hip-Hop or Metal, not so much. In fact, for metal ugly is probably an advantage.

This is of course you are referring to males.

Women pretty much have to be good looking to get anywhere in entertainment.

There are a couple who get in, but the only female who isn't good looking that I can remember anyone paying attention to is Susan Boyle on Britain's got Talent that made the youtube rounds a couple months ago.

IMO (as i duck for cover) Neil Young is awful. Was, is and always will be. Pictures or not.

My wife and I were having a similar conversation just the other night. I'll give you one, Sara Bareilles. She has run-of-the-mill looks with an interesting, yet unspectacular voice.

Yup. And none write their own music; they are no more than the pretty face singing the company's canned, generic pop b.s. It all sounds the same.

Too bad about Amy. Years ago, she was semi good looking and showed a lot of promise. She writes her own material, has an incredible (and unique) voice, and was doing something really different. Maybe she will pull it back together some day. Kinda reminds me of Rickie Lee Jones... She started out strong, lost it, and has come back stronger than ever. Never a real looker, but a very different voice, and also writing her own songs. Very creative lady.

I like 'em both. But wouldn't you say Cass and Janis were sort of pre-television/videos where image was not slammed down our throats on a daily basis, ie: Britney with no drawers on; Britney skinny; Britney chubby; Britney with the kids; Britney without the kids... we tend to see our singers more than hear them these days.

That's my point. Would they have been famous had they arrived today. I think not.
