What weapons/calibers for dinosaurs?

I ask this because of a weird dream I just woke up from.

If you were going to a world full of dinosaurs, from big Tyrannosaurus Rex to fast and deadly velociraptors, what weapons (man-portable) would you take?

Because what I had weren't doing the job very well.

Did you read "A Sound of Thunder" recently?

jyl 09-07-2009 11:00 PM

No, not heard of it.

Just looked it up. A T Rex was up to 7 tons and 45 feet head to tail. I had an M16 and it wasn't very adequate. There were a lot of them. Then the aliens showed up.

I'd think any of the larger elephant guns would work. .600 Nitro express double would be my choice. An RPG would be another fine choice, if you don't mind ruining some meat.

dewolf 09-07-2009 11:52 PM

All you need is ..Chuck Norris.

Porsche-O-Phile 09-08-2009 03:26 AM

I think RPG ammunition would be cheaper than .600 Nitro...

A 20mm would be my choice. Preferably HE.

50bmg and shot placement for t-rex...

t951 09-08-2009 03:58 AM

CheyTac 408 from over 1000yds.....hit it a couple times. I would like that kind of distance if I was dealing with T-Rexes....

jyl 09-08-2009 04:18 AM

Needs to be man portable. And there were lots of dinosaurs. How many RPGs can one man carry?

Super_Dave_D 09-08-2009 05:19 AM

As a suppliment always use hand grenades and smoke - lots of smoke - they hate that stuff!!

In similar real life situations - dealing with nuisance elephants in Africa - standard issue is a plain Jane bolt gun in .458 Winchester Magnum. These animals are like vermin in some areas, but unlike a rat infestation, a small herd can wipe a farmer out overnight. So, they have a need to control elephant populations. This responsibility falls to the game department personel. The idea is to just wade into the herd and start shooting. Pretty exciting stuff...

Good article about double guns in this month's (last month's??) American Rifleman.

Iron sights and they are usally fired from about 50 yds. That is awefully close.

Rexs and Raptors are (were:rolleyes:) hunters and meat eaters, elephants are not.

But a big double would be a good back up gun. Two fast shots..

You need to lay off what ever it is you are drinking before you go to sleep.

I have to go up against Dinosaurs, followed by Aliens, I would prefer a good blaster.

Jdamn!

I've found that my Federation-issued phaser set to "kill" does the trick just fine.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1252417851.jpg

varmint 09-08-2009 06:22 AM

kirk just needed some sulfur, bamboo, and diamonds.

i'd prefer an RPG when going after a T Rex. but figure it will take at least a .50 to get through that hide.

Pfffff.....phasers are for wusses. Try a disrupter.

How about a bolt-action 20mm?

.416 would work nicely, and still supersonic past 2500 yards. Trust me distance is your friend when dealing with large meat eaters. Works well for zombies, same principal.

.50 BMG bare minimum.

A Vulcan cannon wouldn't be bad either.

73 mm to make sure the job is done in one shot...

varmint 09-08-2009 08:13 AM

pack hunting velociraptors are another matter. would definitely want at least a semi automatic for that.

your best option is probably a cobra gunship.
