What weapons/calibers for dinosaurs?
I ask this because of a weird dream I just woke up from.
If you were going to a world full of dinosaurs, from big Tyrannosaurus Rex to fast and deadly velociraptors, what weapons (man-portable) would you take? Because what I had weren't doing the job very well. |
Did you read "A Sound of Thunder" recently?
|
No, not heard of it.
Just looked it up. A T Rex was up to 7 tons and 45 feet head to tail. I had an M16 and it wasn't very adequate. There were a lot of them. Then the aliens showed up. |
I'd think any of the larger elephant guns would work. .600 Nitro express double would be my choice. An RPG would be another fine choice, if you don't mind ruining some meat.
|
All you need is ..Chuck Norris.
|
I think RPG ammunition would be cheaper than .600 Nitro...
A 20mm would be my choice. Preferably HE. |
50bmg and shot placement for t-rex...
|
CheyTac 408 from over 1000yds.....hit it a couple times. I would like that kind of distance if I was dealing with T-Rexes....
|
Needs to be man portable. And there were lots of dinosaurs. How many RPGs can one man carry?
|
As a suppliment always use hand grenades and smoke - lots of smoke - they hate that stuff!!
|
In similar real life situations - dealing with nuisance elephants in Africa - standard issue is a plain Jane bolt gun in .458 Winchester Magnum. These animals are like vermin in some areas, but unlike a rat infestation, a small herd can wipe a farmer out overnight. So, they have a need to control elephant populations. This responsibility falls to the game department personel. The idea is to just wade into the herd and start shooting. Pretty exciting stuff...

Iron sights and they are usally fired from about 50 yds. That is awefully close. Rexs and Raptors are (were:rolleyes:) hunters and meat eaters, elephants are not. But a big double would be a good back up gun. Two fast shots.. |

I have to go up against Dinosaurs, followed by Aliens, I would prefer a good blaster. |
Jdamn!
|
I've found that my Federation-issued phaser set to "kill" does the trick just fine.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1252417851.jpg
|
kirk just needed some sulfur, bamboo, and diamonds.
i'd prefer an RPG when going after a T Rex. but figure it will take at least a .50 to get through that hide. |

How about a bolt-action 20mm? http://www.anzioironworks.com/images...atangle-FP.jpg |
.416 would work nicely, and still supersonic past 2500 yards. Trust me distance is your friend when dealing with large meat eaters. Works well for zombies, same principal.

.50 BMG bare minimum.
A Vulcan cannon wouldn't be bad either. 73 mm to make sure the job is done in one shot... |
pack hunting velociraptors are another matter. would definitely want at least a semi automatic for that.
your best option is probably a cobra gunship. |

BFG9000.
It works against demon spawn and giant cyborg minotaurs, it'll work against dinosaurs. |

What I recall is that my M16 was ineffective. I only had a few grenades. There was some bureaucratic problem with getting more ammunition. Very weird dream.

Mk19 mod3?!?
|
I love the video of the PTRS-41 firing that i put in my last post. Watch the violence of that recoil in slow-mo and enjoy. :D
This would be a good alternative as long as you're in a semi-static position: http://www.gandlairsoft.com/catalog/...07-usarmy-.jpg M-107 self-loading .50BMG rifle, 10+1 capacity. The PTRS-41 is twice as powerful though. Quote:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi.../M4andM203.jpg A 40mm HEDP round should definitely get the job done with one shot. An M-16 rifle would probably be completely inneffective vs a thick skinned critter like a T-Rex unless you're making eye shots. |

Not sure what the deal with the aliens was. They weren't in the dream long enough for me to figure out how to deal with them. There was mind control involved, and not in a good way. And next time, I won't run up that dark tunnel . . . |

Sounds like the the Market is full of huge peril (man eaters) at the moment and you do not have the tools or money to effectively deal with it. The Aliens are unforeseen things or territory that lurk on the periphery, something new that you don't know how its going to play out and your going have to be dealing with as in new government regs, taxes or programs. Lots of anxiety in this one.
Maybe a little self introspection is all the weaponry you need. |
As for literal T-Rex stoppers...a 50 BMG in a Barrett 81 or similar is about the only thing man portable that would get a T-rex's attention.
|
A hummer with a Dillon Aero-gun attached and a trailer of ammo would do it.
|
20mm rifle from the hills.
This one: http://www.anzioironworks.com/20MM-TAKE-DOWN-RIFLE.htm You don't wanna be close. |

Lot of moving pieces right now and am scrambling trying to get "in sync" with the market's direction in the next three months. At this time of the year, we are basically on a countdown - finishing the year strong is what its all about. Feeling kind of hectic on the schedule too. Came back from vacation, then had to travel in SF Bay Area last week, then an out-of-town wedding this last weekend, taking redeye to NYC and then to Boston this week, its all kind of nuts. I have a committment to the board of my kids' school, am supposed to set up a meeting and literally have not been able to schedule it for the past multiple weeks. Or, maybe the son's stuffed dinosaur was the last thing I saw before falling asleep? Maybe I need to drink more. |
some sort of virus delivered by an airgun....or an fuel/air explosive bomb

OrBS - Orbital Bombardment System
One of these days, if we ever are sucessful in making it to other solar systems, we may actually have to worry about things like this. |
Global winter or meteor impact, but I'm not sure what caliber that is, but it should work for most of the big "saurs". However, it might take awhile, and you gotta stay warm too.
Slack off a little on the meds John. Your dreams should eventually de-escalate to zombies which are a little more manageable with regular household utensils. :) Try this website: http://www.sleeps.com/forums/nightmares/22215.htm Sherwood |
....ah, the good old FAE bomb...
.......memories... |

I know what my solution is for zombies. I'll simply take refuge with Rick Lee, sniper, or any number of heavily-armed PPOTers. I think Jeff H is closest to me. |
If you are ever confronted by a t-rex or other giant meat eater and have limited firepower.....just go for the eyes.....they can't eat you if they can't see you.....
Raptors?.......a mini-gun would work we...... Or just find a M1A1 and relax :) |
