Yep, same here!

There just happened to be a classified ad in the Sac Bee this weekend. '58 Project car with no rust.

I called. It is, by the owner's account, a primer bodied, running engine, weak transmission car. I'm assuming the interior is not good. He is asking $1500, but on the phone he already hinted at lowering the price.

This could be something. He said what is there is stock. I've got to do a little research on the specific year before I go look.

Thom, it is in your neighborhood.

ckissick 09-15-2009 02:17 PM

Sounds promising, assuming his definition of "no rust" means no rust. What is the original color?

Brother 09-15-2009 02:19 PM

I don't know about the color.

We all know "no rust" means nothing that you can see from across the parking lot.

Tobra 09-15-2009 06:04 PM

Perhaps you could bribe Thom with a beer or lunch to go check it out with you. Nothing like a pair of educated eyes to pick out potential problems.

Take a weak magnet, some crappy clothes you can climb around under a car with, little flashlight, inspection mirror, probably other stuff too

Brother 09-15-2009 06:30 PM

Bribes will be made when the time comes. I'm getting closer to the commitment stage, but I'm still in the planning stage until I get my garage cleaned out. I don't want to waste anyone's time until then.

I just got a big shipment of furniture from some family estate stuff. I've got to get all my old stuff out of my garage first. There is a big charity garage sale in my neighborhood pretty soon so I'm waiting to clear out. That and I have a few other medium sized projects to take care of first before I drag a car home. I finished a trailer yesterday, and I need to build a shed this week before we go camping this weekend.

The list is long after being gone for a few months.

I wouldn't turn down a nice ghia. +1 on the '67, the more original, the better.

I like the 67. Neat headlights and the older bumpers. Just a cool car.

My brother is the second owner of an all (with the exception of the paint) original 62.

Brother 09-21-2009 07:48 PM

I went to go look at the 58 that was in the paper.

(As an aside, if you list a car in the classifieds and leave a number, answer your phone. If not, return a message. It took over a week to get a meeting time set.

Anyways, here is what rust free looks like.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1253591095.jpg

Oops. Forgot to mention that there was no roof. Upgraded to 12 volt. Underbody looked fine. Mechanicals are probably okay. I say probably because there was no battery to try and turn it over. There were enough acorns in the interior and engine bay to survive off of if the car ever broke down so that is a plus.

I employed the "Shut Up" strategy with the guy and just walked around and poked and prodded. He just kept talking and talking. Without any prompting he dropped the price down to $1000. 33% off without a word. I'm going to have to use that technique more often. I didn't buy it though. I told him that I would have to do more research.

trekkor 09-21-2009 08:10 PM

That's not a '68.

KT

ckissick 09-21-2009 08:12 PM

That's a '58 right? It's not a '68.

That's rust free huh? Well, if you want to try your hand at rust repair, offer $500. That's a nice, original front bumper, hard to find.

Brother 09-22-2009 12:20 AM

Yes, my typo. It is a 58.

The Gaijin 09-22-2009 05:30 AM

I like it!

Cornpanzer 09-22-2009 11:49 AM

Yeah, me too. hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like the rust is that arid desert rust that is more of a protective coating. As long as the aprons are unhit, that car here in Ohio would be considered a virgin one-owner! :p

Brother 09-26-2009 07:44 PM

Here is one that I'm following up on. He sent me some pictures. It looks like it took a slow speed hit to the front.

Burnin' oil 09-28-2009 09:12 AM

FYI, I bought a '69 vert in Twain Harte a few weeks ago for $4k. Very good shape with a recently rebuilt motor and transmission and with disc brakes in the front. So far, so good.

Rufblackbird 09-30-2009 10:53 PM

If you're even slightly interested in a '69, my roommate might be selling his 2nd owner (original was his grandpa) bug with under 40k miles. The body needs some work (paint is bubbling under the pass rear window, some rust under the brake reservoir) but it's completely stock save for the paint (currently red) and 15x6 Fuchs.

widebody911 10-01-2009 05:35 AM

That thing is a piece. Looks like they sold off the sunroof; $500 would be generous.

I listed this '66 for a neighbor. He's dreaming @ $5k, but you could probably get it for $3k
