Have You Ever Been on TV

I've been on TV twice that I know of:

Once in 1983 during the Tournament of Roses Parade. We had seat right in from of the cameras and they caught me running out into the street to pick up flowers that had dropped off of the floats during the parade.

Once in 1995. I was interviewed by CLTV (Chicagoland Television) because my high school had a bank branch in it and I was one of the employees.

Anymore I try not to do things that will land me in front of a television camera.

I got to rebound for Larry Bird during the 3-point shootout competition before the All-Star game. That took a good chunk of my 15 minutes. He was cordial to the kids helping with the All-Star promotions, but Dr. J was probably the coolest with young fans and exceptionally nice.

Yeah. Lots of news spots. When you see yourself later on TV, isn't it amazing how fat you look on screen?

I was asked to do a TV spot for a friend. It was one of those "Ask the Doctor" programs that airs on local cable and probably has a total viewership of 10 or 11 desperately bored people. They gave me a CD of the program and it sat on the counter for a month before I threw it away. Even my wife and kids couldn't bear to watch it. I don't blame them.

Anyway, there was some big awards banquet that I was invited to (I skipped it) and somehow I won a Telly award. It must be a mistake, because the show was awful. Really. Maybe it's the Special Olympics of Broadcasting award. Who knows.

It's a beautiful statuette made in the same foundry that makes the Oscar awards. It certainly doesn't represent any kind of real achievement. It really means nothing to me. I'm currently using it as a doorstop.

Yes. A lot of my programs were featured on the Military Channel, Future Weapons, etc...I always differed and let the young guys and gals get the air time.

It is funny, I have given any number of speeches in front of thousands and I am as comfortable as can be, but the minute the camera comes on it's Dork's O' Poppin.

Just once, interviewed when I was helping out at a charity bike giveaway one year.

It's amazing how many people will tell you they saw you on TV.

Yes, did a few TV commercials as a kid. Tried out for many, many more.

It was a great experience, riding the train to the city, taking rides in big checker cabs, being spoiled rotten by all these adults - visiting my Dad at work. Wow.

My Mom was not a "stage mother" at all. As I got older, and she saw kids my age (and maybe me) take it all a bit too seriously - she pulled the plug on the whole thing. Back to 2nd grade - full time!

Years later, I am one of the few foreigner's in my small city in Japan - and a film crew comes to town to do a car commercial. They recruit us "gaijin" (as the back-drop was supposed to be Europe) and hired us for the day. Many years had gone by - but it was all strangely familiar..

The background music was the #1 song of the year - I saw that commercial endlessly...

dd74 - it's not the screen....trust us...

My claim to fame -- back in 1979, as part of the "International Year of the Child" events, there was a gathering of children's groups from different cultures and nations who performed at the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Channel 11 (11-Alive) did a short news blurb about the whole weeks-long event, and a Ukranian chorus and a Hungarian dance troop, which I was a part of, were selected as two of the groups that would be representative of the festivites. IIRC, as part of the dance, at one point the guys would circle up in the middle of the dance floor and we'd pass our decorative hats around, placing them on the next person's head, until the hats retuned to their original owner. Apparently, that was very amusing to the news reporter and they aired that segment on their program.

I did a bunch of extra work in the 80's on local shows most notably "21 Jump Street", Johnny Depps' launch pad.

I think it paid 12/hr. Free food, a lot of standing around but no awards.

I have had a few little forgetable pieces on TV. I wasn't going to post until I was reminded that I was a popular news story in the 80's. I participated in "condom awareness day" at the University of Oregon. They filmed me handing out rubbers to lots of folks. I thought nothing of it until I got a call from my Mom. She was a little rattled.

Favorite moment that day. Handing a condom to a homeless woman. She said "honey, I haven't had need for one of those for 15 years." Me: "maybe this will be your lucky day!"

Couple of times in emergency response situations when I worked for the South Coast Air Quality Management District here in Los Angeles. I was in their Air Toxics/Haz Mat program.

I'm on set for TV shows everyday, but behind the camera.
