Several years ago Bruce Hornsby was in town opening for Bonnie Raitt. He'd closed his show about the time I was making my way into the backstage area. I was trundling along with my camera gear, aggravated because of having to shoot another concert... in the news business "shooting a concert" means you get the first two or three songs and then you're booted. It's much more work than it's worth in most cases.
Anyway, I was making my way inside the coliseum, head down as I walked, when I noticed at a short distance a pair of shoes headed my way. I glanced up and it was Hornsby walking back to his hotel, only about a half-block away, alone. Normally I never made too big of a deal over celebs but this time I stopped and told him how much I liked his work. He stopped and we struck up a short conversation. He was one of the most genuine, appreciative musicians I have ever had the chance to speak with. A real pro. And a heck of a nice guy.

P.S. To the above post.
I still have my Clapton ticket stub from 1978. It cost me $5.50 to see The Man!

I watched the show last night just because they were going to be on, I won't be doing that again.

I think the song was good. Hard to tell cause the audio mix was terrible.

I caught several shows when Hornsby was playing with the Dead. He really added something to the band. The last time I saw him was a couple of years ago with Ricky Scaggs, out at the St, Michelle Winery's outdoor concert stage. Fantastic show. I really like his work.
I've never actually seen Clapton live. I don't know why; I've certainly had the opportunity. I've got examples of his music at every stage of his career, and enjoy all of it. I've just never gone out of my way to go see him. Wonder why...

Have seen him live a dozen times. Not so much in the last decade. Every show you'd leave thinking the man can't get any better and the next show he would be better.

I don't own a single piece of recorded music (don't know why) by Hornsby but feel he is one of the most under rated musicians around! And really enjoy his work. As far as Clapton, first time seeing him live was, like I mentioned, 1978 for $5.50. A very good investment for over two hours of music! Fast forward to the year that Stevie Ray Vaughn's helicopter crash killed him and some of Clapton's people - if memory serves me corrrectly. Stevie was the opening act for Clapton in Birmingham and I had tix to the show. The show was like two or maybe three days after the crash killed all those folks. To his enormous credit, Clapton played the show. He did no interviews, revoked press photo credentials and was very subdued in his interactions with the audience. But, I have never heard him play with more feeling, or intensity that he did that night. It was amazing just how "big" his sound was and how "huge" his technique was as channeled the pain into his show.

I saw Hornsby playing jazz at the Bowl in a trio with Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette (opening for Brubeck). He is a seriously great musician, but is thought of as a one-hit wonder. But that is fairly typical of the biz.
Seen Clapton quite a few times. Had tickets for the '80 tour but he cancelled. Finally saw the August tour in '87 with Nathan East, Greg Phillenganes and Phil Collins. Great show. Then saw him a few times in the 90's with larger ensembles. He was one of my heros growing up and I still know a lot of his early stuff by heart. Didn't see Leno - I just can't bring myself to watch any network tv these days...besides, it'll show up on youtube (if it isn't already there). |

Yeah, you needed to be a lip reader, you couldn't hear him. I didn't think much of Leno's show and I like the guy, I hope it gets better.
