What Do You Like About The 1980s?

Just wondering. Past decades seem to become cool again after about 25 years have passed. So people were nostalgic for the 50s in the 70s "Happy Days"), for the 60s in the 80s, for the 70s in the 90s ("That 70s Show"), etc. So it is time for the 80s to be cool again. And indeed I hear occasionally that the 80s are back, although I'm not exactly plugged into the fashionista buzz. If that is true - please correct me if I'm off by a decade - then the question is: What Do You Like About The 1980s? From that era, what music or fashion or products do you still think is pretty cool? What aspects of life are you nostalgic for, or wish we still had? Who or what really defines that era for you? What were you doing then? | ||

Porn was better. And, like the music or not, you had to really know how to play guitar back then. Now you can totally suck and be on the cover of all the guitar mags. There were no sucky guitar players back then.

Speaking of the 80's, the week before last I was riding my bike down Sunset past the Whiskey, Roxy, Rainbow, etc. and really was feeling nostalgic. Back in the 80's heavy metal heyday, I had not yet been to CA. Gawd, I wish I could travel back in time to those days when all the hair bands got big in LA. I went to the Guitar Center on Sunset and was watching the documentary on Eddie Van Halen's latest guitar build while trying to tune out the HORRIBLE playing by the customers in the background. When I was hanging out in music stores in the 80's, you rarely heard a bad guitar player.

And let's not forget the Cold War. East German stuff is now all the rage in Germany. They call it Ostalgie (German for east + nostaligia). I still have my first passport with an East German exit visa stamped in it.

You could not find a large hammer within a 5 mile radius. I still have the hammer that I finally did find.

The movie Cannonball Run with the wonderful sound of the Lamborghini Countach going through the gears The '80s seemed to be the era where turbocharging really came into the mainstream sports car market Ah the punk rock movement, who could ever forget. This was mostly in response the one of the greatest presidents in modern history, Ronald Reagan. Tight rolled acid washed jeans Leg warmers Spandex Michael Jackson back when he made music and danced

Parachute pants. I grew up in the 80's so some of my fondest memories are from that time period. The music(metal, specifically) is probably the biggest for me. We were playing the clubs in Detroit, hoping to be the next GnR.

I graduated from high school and went to college in the '80s, so for me it was a great time for those reasons, but there's not much from that decade that has withstood the "test of time" IMHO.

There's a handful of movies, groups, songs, cars, etc from the 80s that aren't bad, but the 80's had more crap than not.
