New Turntables

The Beatles thread got me re-thinking my old vinyl albums. I have a beat to heck Harmon K turn table and was thinking of raising it from the dead. But I am way out of date on new turn tables. Anyone here have a recommendation for a new one?

to bad the laser no needle units never caught on
that teck really cut the pops and scratch problems
and never would hurt or wear the records

lots of higher end used stuff out there
most only need a new needle or cart

the best turntables came without a tone arm [ PRO GRADE units]
so different name brands on table and arm is a tip to the better units

cleaning your records properly removes most pops and crackles.

flatbutt, a coupla years ago, I decided I wanted to start enjoying my vinyl again, too. I didn't have the dough to go high end... just wanted good, basic performance. Did the research and got this one and have been very happy with it:

Amazon.com: Panasonic Technics SLBD20D Semi Automatic Turntable: Electronics

From one of the customer reviews... this told me it was exactly what I was looking for:

"If you are on a strict budget, then for sure this is the best choice under 200 dollars, but don't expect exceptional sound. A good homebaked player to revive your vinyl collection, take it as such, and I think many people will be quite happy with it."

Whatever happened to the laser based turntables?

I remember they were touted to be the ultimate turntable.

good stuff fellas, keep it coming. I have old school Dynaco amp and pre-amp so no problem with electronics.

They cost too much. No one could afford them.

My 1980 linear tracking Techniques turntable still works just fine...dunno what I'll do if it ever fails. But really, I think they'll be made...the market is still there because some of us still prefer the "warmth" of vinyl sound.

I bought a turntabe a few years ago at an upscale audio equipment dealer in Evanston IL. I was looking at two, a new NAD 533 and a used Linn Sondek. The round glasses, turtleneck wearin' salesman told me that the Linn was like a used Mercedes and the NAD was like a new VW. I went with the used Benz. I paid $400. I grew tired of it because to really have it set up and maintained properly, you need to make a hobby of it. I sold it on eBay. It fetched $660 from a local buyer.

Avoid a plastic turntable if finances allow. Rega turntables are hard to beat in the affordable price range. I sold 250 Rega turntables in 10 days in the early 80s on a western roadtrip . . .

the plastic will resonate - you would be better off with the special mdf used in some speaker boxes...

right after CDs came out there was a huge glut of turntables on the market - wish I'd bought one then. there has been a bit of an uptick in the interest lately

OTOH, I only have a dozen LPs left...

Technics 1200. Not an audiophile turntable to be sure, but the toughest Mofos on the planet. You can pick them us second hand for a couple hundred bucks.
