Bought a BMW 68 R50/2

Long story but I bought a 2002 GS1150 from an impeccable seller outside of Philly last May and he had this little bike in his garage when I picked up the GS. It was his best friends who was in Europe. His buddy had ridden it around Europe in the early 70's while in the Navy and then had it shipped to his parents house in Buffalo. His friend however never returned to the US. It then sat in storage with a bunch of parts for 35 years.

He had pulled it out shortly before my trip and was freshening it up for his friend. He had recently done a total resto on a 69s for his friend which received the sport tank originally on this bike. Sadly his buddy passed away shortly after my return to Seattle.

I was reconnecting with him and found out he had made the decision to sell the /2 and wanted me to have it. It is very original although the case was damaged in Italy towards the end of his buddies tour so the numbers do not match.

Looking for shipping now. Very excited to have the opportunity to preserve and ride this bike.

Very nice! It's neat to know the history of the bike. They are quite enjoyable to work on.

Those are such sweet, beautiful machines. The smaller the displacement, the smoother they are.

When I was 10 years old, in 1969, my next-door neighbor married her BF. They were about 21 and she used to babysit me. For their honeymoon, they flew to Germany and picked up a new BMW MC and toured Europe for 6 weeks on it, then had it shipped home. I can vividly remember checking it out on the sidewalk on a perfect summer day when it arrived home, how smooth it ran, the shine of the black and chrome, everything.

Can you even imagine how great it would have been to be touring Europe on that with your hot bride and a map in 1969? Sigh...

Jerry,

Nice score - I like the solo saddle and headlight mirrors. You're lucky that it looks pretty much ready to go. I have a 1969 R69S that still needs some work that I can't do. I've rebuilt the transmission, re-spoked the wheels, and gotten it running - but there's still more to get it on the road and I'm having a lot of trouble finding people that work on these things. Good luck with yours, and let me know if you find any local resources for these things.

I've been looking at these bikes for quite a while. But with 3 Porsches and a VFR 700 plus a boat right now it's hard to justify a purchase.....but I am just like Sott's raccoon....I really really want!

I browse eBay periodically - seems like the BMW R-series sellers always keep their bikes in near perfect condition.

Here's one I would buy in a heartbeat.....if I wasn't already so loaded up.

Well, if you are willing to ship and pay a pretty penny Myrl (the seller) did this one.

but he did this as a favor to his friend, he's not in the business. I hear there is a guy in Portland that is an expert. Have you talked to Mick Vallantine over on Aurora?

PM Joeseka, he has a pretty good BMW network. Kinda surprised he hasn't chimed in here.

Those are the Earls forks, and used on most of the early bikes. They are very good for a bike with a side car, and many BMW's of this era were used like this.

Good score! I just got the R1100RSL up and going last weekend and if the weather stays good may get the R75/5 online as well.

Deal is done. Owner is putting in bar end signals with original switch and aftermarket signals. He's also going through the carbs again. This guy is meticoulos to say the least. Many parts included. Extra trans, a few seats, cylinder, magneto, shocks, two fairings including one that was on the bike in the 70's and some other stuff including the tool kit necessary for all enging work.

Now to arrange the shipping and shop for a vintage leather bike jacket and goggles.......
