Fastest car you've driven and ridden in?
Thinking about this today, Might make a good thread. What is the fastest car you have driven? What is the fastest car you have ridden in?
For the drive would be a chipped 951. The fastest I have ridden in is a 928GTS. |
Ford GT have ridden in it at around 160 and driven at about 135. Considering top speed is over 200 didn't get too close to it. :D

Mine will be pretty tame compared to many in this group. I had my '88 911 targa up to redline in 5th gear which is 150mph. That covers both for me.

Ridden - 140 on the speedo of a '57 Covette. A long time ago.

I've driven my dad's long since gone 9 second rail dragster. Also drove my brother in laws 500hp sprint car. The fastest street car i've driven was this, also my dad's, and also gone:

Fastest been in and driven...a Twin turbo DeTomaso Pantera. Frightening.....
|
When a guy from Ruf took me for a ride along in an RGT, I saw the speedo go hit 330 km/hr. when I opened my eyes briefly. And we weren't on a hwy.

Fastest car I've ever driven was probably this '87 N/A 944 I was looking at 3 or 4 years ago... the engine had been thoroughly massaged. I never really opened it up, so I can't give you a number.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1254636658.jpg Fastest car I've ever ridden in was probably my uncle's '66 427/435 Stingray convertible that he bought new when I was in high school. He never really opened it up when I was in it, so I can't give you a number. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1254637531.jpg |
Over 200 at Pocono on the IMSA course....
In our 935 clone... I don't have any video from Pocono.. From Watkins Glen...I think 178 entering the inner loop... I would have to check the data http://www.rudtnersracing.com/Videos/WGI05.wmv |
I've had A 2004 Carrera 4S up over 140 on a dealer test drive once.
The 924S up around 135-140 several times Driven several single seat winged formula cars before, experiencing 2.5G+ lateral and longitudinal deceleration- there is nothing like that. Also got to jump in a modified shifter cart in a parking lot once. One of the worst decisions of my life was to, in this parking lot- pull 5h gear. 6th gear went out to about 130. I nearly wrote it off. That kart could do 0-60mph in about 2.7 seconds and could do 0-100mph-0 (zero to 100 back to 0) in about 8 seconds. That will be the fastest accelerating machine I will every drive unless I get some seat time in a F3000. |
Ultima GTR:
You're at an off-ramp somewhere in South Carolina with this crazy German guy, and he says: "OK. Now ve vill go to zee hundred and fiftee milez hour on the off ramp, and zen vee merge into zee traffic. Okay? Hold on." And he wasn't exaggerating one bit, either. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1170924460.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1170924519.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/325834-trade-ride-your-911-concert-tickets-long.html |
I got my 02 2.7 Boxster over 130mph. Many years ago I had my fathers 1989 Ford SHO wide the F open, which would hypothetically be north of 140, but who knows?

Fastest I've driven, Ferrari 348, Porsche GT3RS
Shotgun: fastest acceleration Ariel Atom 300 |
This 997 S Cab.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1254655869.jpg

I think the fastest I have ever ridden in was a RUF prepared 993 twin turbo. That thing would collapse your chest when it would accelerate. I have been north of 150 a handful of times , mostlyl in c4 corvettes. I had an 85, it was supposed to go 151.Never got past 146, but at the time, my landlord(he is serving time for 48 counts of grand grand theft auto right now, mostly corvettes, and big trucks) just bought a new 96 vette, and we used to take it out for midnight runs up the interstate all of the time, I think we got near 160. Had my 951 nearing the rev limiter in high gear a couple of times as well. I am a gearhead, and have always driven fast, consider myself a pretty capable driver, but to be honest, any time I have gone past say maybe 125, I was white knuckles, scared sheetless, and found my confidence shrinking rapidly. Have also driven/ owned a few high power muscle cars as well, while they may not have topped 125, hanging on to them on the way there was always a rush

My RX7, tips scales at 2500 lbs and puts 400 to the wheels. It scares the crap out of me on a regular basis. I actually detune it to 330 to the wheels for track days in fear I will kill myself with it.
Everyone told me my 3.6 swapped 1980 Targa was hella fast but I always felt like it was my slow car compared to the RX7. That car has warped my sense of what fast is. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...inmoroso06.jpg She is getting new paint next week. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21.../Painting1.jpg |
An E46 M3 is probably the fastest car I've driven or ridden in. Great car, but not very impressive in this crowd.:p

Jaguar XJ220 when Jaguar brought it to the states for a tour.

My 911 racing another 911 at 150
|
An indicated 156mph is the fastest i've ever driven a car on the street. In my 928S.
|
This GT3 RS @ 170 mph! Car was still pulling, but I ran out of real estate...

got to brag when I can.
Mclaren M1b! As Mark said when I asked how fast he was going at Road America. "Scary Fast"http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1254668685.jpg |
Fastest driven-145 indicated on speedo-my Z28.
Fastest/quickest ride along-8 second Vega with a nitrous fed big block. Front wheels off the ground on launch. |
Fasted to ride in was a 1979 Maserati Bora. Here is a pic i found online.
It was all kinds of fast. http://medias.forum-auto.com/uploads...20bora_202.jpg Fastest I have driven... I guess my 1988 944 non turbo. I have never driven a 944 turbo... yet. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...20944/9443.jpg |
1968 Vette 427 /435 TriPower - wide open - no idea how fast we were going - no time to look down at the speedo.
|
There is a difference between "quick" and "fast" and I think it is our duty as motor-heads to explore the difference - LOL!
A quick car slams you back in the seat, melts the drive tires and launches hard enough to pull your hair out by the roots, but is usually not accompanied by mind-bending top speed (sometimes, but not usually). A fast car might not feel "quicK" at low speed but it builds forward momentum with a stunning rush until the world warps out of the windshield like a fish-eye lens on a camera. The car hurtles toward the horizon and you think that the curve of the earth will be over come and you will simply keep accelerating into space... And you want more and more of it, once will never be enough... Our spyder is a fairly quick car with a little fast thrown in (1600 lbs with fuel and 260ish big stout German horses). I drove a old slightly beat up 930 though that also qualifies for my "esteemed" go-fast group. It belongs to Kevin @ Injection labs. The engine makes 350 to the wheels on pump gas at a mile high. Very tractable car to drive around but when you plant your foot, oh baby did it get busy! Also add to my admittedly short list, a Bonneville Speed-week preped Trans Am that hit over 200 on the salt (a complete turd off the line), and a Fiat X/19 with a ported 13B rotary in it. Not as fast as the others on the list, but it was my first "fast" car. angela |
Laneco great descriptions.
|
Whats that game that 930 drivers play with their passengers- after the boost kicks in, try to grab the dashboard... :-)
|
reading the linked earlier thread, Grady still wins at 215 ...and how long ago was the 935 used on the tracks?
|
Car = tweeked 930 turbo. Unbelievable.
Bike = Honda CBR1000RR Repsol edition, also "tweaked". Unbelievably scary. Under hard acceleration I was at 150mph before I even realized it... death machine. |
|
Had my '95 RX7 TT R1 up to an indicated 163, rode in a Ford GT but not at any great speed.
[QUOTE=Laneco;4934652]There is a difference between "quick" and "fast"/QUOTE] "Fast" = max. speed "Quick" is how long it takes to get to "fast". :) My RX7 had little torque (but beaucoup RPMs), so it didn't slam you back into your seat like my modified C5 Vette coupe did, but it was pretty quick - easily quicker than the Vette in the twisties. |
Gallardo.
|
Well, it wasn't a car it was a S-2 cod during my NAVY days. I rode the mail plane off the catapult of the USS Coral Sea in 1971. Fierce and unbelievable acceleration. You are instructed to lean hard forward into the harness because when you are off the catapult the acceleration stops abruptly, it's like hitting a brick wall (sort of) and would throw you hard into the harness if you weren't already leaning into it. WOW.

dont know the year...but a HIGHLY modified chevy LUV pickup truck. shorten rear end to handle the humoungous mickey thompson slicks. the truck was a small block powered demon. the body was lenghten a bit...i think it ran 9's. the guy still had a weird bench seat in it when we ran the quarter mile. i was really scared.
