Obscure Question
This photograph of the painter Georgia O'Keefe was given to me many years ago, and has hung in our kitchen ever since.
I've forgotten who the cowboy on the left is. Does anyone know? ![]()

That photo is from 1937 - shot in Arizona by Ansel Adams. The man is Orville Cox - a ranch hand, I believe.
Out of curiosity, is it signed?

Not sure. It was given to me framed, with a sealed back.
Orville Cox, eh. Not sure who that is, but a dinner guest last night insisted it was DH Lawrence which struck me as absurd—even though he lived in the area for a while. So he bet me a case of wine. DHL would have been a lot older, and I have never seen him without a beard, let alone in cowboy kit. So I think I just won me a case of wine.

Mat looks fairly recent?
A signed original sold for over $30K. Regardless - very cool photo.

Interesting story here. Looks like your friend's guess was close. Apparently, O'Keeffe painted Lawrence and Gerald Heard as trees... Another photograph taken by Adams:

DHL was dead when the photo was taken. The 'tree' is still there, in front of DHL's ranch house. There's a bench under the tree one can lie on and look up. Never heard about drugs, and I knew people that knew her well... she was almost 100 when she died in the mid 80's. Last edited by tcar; 10-05-2009 at 09:32 AM.. |

Hmm, that painting doesn't look like it has a vagina hidden in it somewhere. Odd.

More on Georgia and Orville Cox
Full Bloom: The Art and Life of Georgia O'Keeffe p 372
Stumbled on your question and this answer while looking for info on THE GERALD TREE II so thought I would pass it along despite the age of the post. The photo was taken by Ansel Adams on a camping trip into Colorado and Arizona in 1937. David McAlpin, Godfrey Rockefeller & wife, and Ghost Ranch wrangler Orville Cox were also on the trip. "When Cox's wife saw the photograph of O"Keeffe's suggestive glance, she flew into a jealous rage and tore the photograph to pieces." I have since borrowed the book from the library and it is a good read if you are interested in O'Keeffe. |

Hmm, interesting first post...
Just saying, because Dottore, was one of the most respected members of this board who sadly, we think, passed away several years ago. His wisdom and knowledge has been greatly missed.
